FC Barcelona will not return to its iconic Spotify Camp Nou stadium this season according to SPORT’s David Bernabeu, who reported this news citing anonymous sources during the latest episode of his La Posesion podcast released on Monday evening in Europe.

Barca’s ground was closed at the end of its last La Liga-winning season under former head coach Xavi Hernandez, in the spring of 2023.

Since then, there have been various false dawns as per reopening dates, with the Camp Nou currently being renovated to one day hold 105,000 spectators.

With many disgruntled by having to walk up Montjuic hill and all the problems that entails as Barca temporarily uses the Estadi Olimpic Lluis Companys, it was expected that Culers could meet their new home in November 2024 to coincide with the club’s 125th anniversary.

That obviously didn’t come to pass, nor did a February date materialize. In said latter month, though, the club did confirm that it had already started the process of planting turf in the stadium as part of a process that usually takes 10 weeks to complete.

This meant that a return for a hypothetical first leg of the Champions League semifinals on either April 29 or 30 was mooted, with a potentially title race-deciding installment of El Clasico against Real Madrid around May 10 in the Camp Nou in front of an initial 60,000 punters also a mouthwatering prospect.

According to Bernabeu, though, it is a case of “chapter closed” for Barca playing at Camp Nou in 2024/2025.

While work on the facilities is progressing, it is not going “at the pace it was supposed to”.

“In principle, the return home was scheduled to take place this season; however, everything indicates that this will not happen unless there is a last-minute change.

“For this very reason, although the option of playing the Clasico at the Barca stadium was commented on, there will be no home game that Hansi Flick’s team won’t play in Montjuic barring a miracle,” Bernabeu further explained.

In an additional blow, the well-informed journalist also said that with the third ring of the ground still yet to be built, “it is difficult to know exactly if [Barca] will be able to start next season at the Camp Nou”.
