Iran’s fruit export ban has increased demand for European apples in India
The reaction of Indian apple importers to Iran’s export ban on the product was immediate. “For the past few days, I have been receiving many calls from Indian apple importers requesting European fruit. The inquiries I personally receive mainly concern Italian apples, but our commercial partner in Poland, the company Miltrade, is also seeing increased demand for apples from India,” comments Mrs. Elisavet Kyriazi, a fruit broker based in Imathia, Greece, specializing in the markets of Iran and India, as well as in apples and kiwifruit.
Mrs. Kyriazi adds: “Our trade partner in Iran, the export company Gilda Fruit, has informed us that the export ban will last for one month. Although, so far, there has been no price increase for European apples destined for India, I believe it is very likely to happen in the coming days, especially as the news spreads among the trade community. Our partners in Iran have also informed us that initially, kiwifruit exports were expected to be included in the ban, but this was ultimately avoided,” notes the Greek fruit broker.

“The Iranian and Indian markets are considered difficult for Europeans, whether for export or import. However, we have extensive experience in fruit trading between Greece, India, and Iran. I travel frequently and for extended periods to Iran and India, managing a broad network of contacts in customs services and trade companies. Last year, we managed to significantly reduce the shipping time for Iranian kiwifruit to Greece and Europe, while also ensuring the correct bureaucratic procedures and the quality of the fruit,” says Mrs. Kyriazi.
This year, as Mrs. Kyriazi describes, the flow of kiwifruit between these three countries has shifted: “Iranian kiwifruit has become more expensive this year, which has limited the volume of exports to India. Of course, the fact that Iran and India are neighboring countries keeps Iranian kiwifruit imports a priority for Indian importers, but this has also given us the opportunity to send them more Greek kiwifruit from the Greek company Tsiatsmas Fruit, with a shorter delivery time—32 days instead of 50 last year. Of course, Europe is not out of our scope, and recently, we managed to create new bonds between Greek kiwifruit exporters and Hungarian importers,” the Greek broker concludes.
