A24 has set a release date for Materialists, director Celine Song’s follow-up to her Academy Award-nominated film Past Lives. Materialists features an all-star cast that includes Dakota Johnson (Fifty Shades of Grey), Chris Evans (The Avengers), and Pedro Pascal (The Mandalorian). Materialists was announced in February 2024 and began filming in April, with production wrapping at the beginning of June. The film will now open in theaters a little over a year after principal photography wrapped.
The studio announced that Materialists will open in theaters on Jun. 13, 2025. Materialists sees Johnson play an ambitious young New York City matchmaker who finds herself torn between her perfect match and her imperfect ex. A24 will release the film theatrically in the North American market, with Sony Pictures Releasing International handling the worldwide distribution. A24 also released the film’s official poster, featuring a heart-shaped cake, which can be seen below.

Materialists‘ Jun. 13 release date is the same weekend as Universal Pictures’ live-action remake, How to Train Your Dragon, though the two movies will be competing for different markets. A summer release is also the strategy that A24 took with Song’s previous film, Past Lives, which opened in theaters on Jun. 2, 2023, and went on to be nominated for Best Original Screenplay and Best Picture at the 96th Academy Awards. Unlike Past Lives, which originally opened at the Sundance Film Festival in 2023 and built up the buzz from there, it is now too early to tell if A24 is hoping for Materialists to be another potential Oscar play.
The Official A24 Summer Movie Slate
Materialists’ summer release date shows A24 betting big on some of its most prominent breakout directors from 2023. Opening two weeks prior, on May 30, 2025, is Bring Her Back, the follow-up film from Talk to Me directors Danny Philippou and Michael Philippou. Talk to Me was a breakout box office hit, while Past Lives was an awards darling. A24 likely wants to foster some of their most creative directors, particularly after big names like Robert Eggers and Sean Baker have found new homes at Focus Features and Neon, respectively. Expect to see A24 announce a few more titles for their summer release slate, which is jam-packed with several blockbuster franchise films, one of which features a Materialists star.
With Dakota Johnson, Chris Evans, and Pedro Pascal all having played Marvel superheroes in the form of Madame Web, Captain America, and Mister Fantastic, respectively, Materialists is the unofficial Marvel team-up movie of the year fans should keep an eye out for. Pascal certainly will be busy as The Last of Us Season 2 debuts in April 2025, which Materialists follows up, and then The Fantastic Four: First Steps one month later. Meanwhile, Evans and Johnson are looking to hopefully bounce back after a rough 2024 for both actors with bombs like Red One and Madame Web, respectively. Luckily, they are working with Celine Song, whose film Past Lives proved herself one of the most exciting directors working today, and that will hopefully pay off for them.
