Steve Carell Joins Untitled Movie From ‘Succession’ Creator Jesse Armstrong and HBO
HBO is reteaming with Succession creator Jesse Armstrong for a new project that will serve as Armstrong’s feature directorial debut. The currently untitled film is heading in front of the cameras soon, and will feature an ensemble cast that includes Steve Carell and Jason Schwartzman.
Per a press release from Warner Bros., Armstrong’s feature will be an original movie for HBO that begins filming this month in Park City, Utah and will premiere this spring. In addition to Carell and Schwartzman, the film also stars Cory Michael Smith and Ramy Youssef and its official logline reveals that the movie follows “a group of billionaire friends who get together against the backdrop of a rolling international crisis.” Armstrong, who is also writing and executive producing the project, had this to say about reuniting with HBO:

Here’s an abundance of sitcoms and dark comedies from Jesse Armstrong, the creator of Succession, to watch next.
“I’m intrigued to discover whether being around so many brilliant actors and directors on ‘Succession’ has in any way rubbed off on me. Let’s hope so. I’m grateful to Casey Bloys, Francesca Orsi and the whole HBO team for backing this film so wholeheartedly and helping me pull together a dream team of cast and crew.”
HBO Is Staying in the Jesse Armstrong Business
An image of the project’s screenplay was also released via Warner Bros. and is shown with the film’s title covered in snow. Given what Armstrong did with Succession for HBO, it should come as no surprise that Francesca Orsi, the EVP of HBO Programming and Head of HBO Drama Series Films, is excited to re-team with Armstrong. Orsi said, “We’re ecstatic to be back in business with the singular talent Jesse Armstrong coming off our fruitful collaboration on Succession. Jesse once again raises the bar with a bold examination of modern greed, power and male ambition. That this feature serves as his directorial debut will only elevate what is already thrilling on the page, and we couldn’t be more excited to share this timely film with the world soon.”
Succession wrapped on HBO two years ago, and it quickly became not only one of the network’s most acclaimed series, but probably one of the most lauded television shows in recent memory. Over four seasons, the series earned 75 Emmy nominations and won 19, including the Primetime Emmy for Outstanding Drama Series in 2020, 2022, and 2024 – the same years it won the Golden Globe for Best Television Series – Drama.
Armstrong himself has won seven Primetime Emmy Awards and also boasts an Academy Award nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay for his work on the 2010 film In the Loop, an honor that he shared with Armando Iannucci and Tony Roche. He first came to be known for his writing on the British comedy shows Peep Show and Fresh Meat with writing partner Sam Bain, as well as the satirical political series The Thick of It.
All four seasons of Succession are currently streaming on Max.
