Miles Holcomb once again named Southside football coach

Miles Holcomb is once again the head football coach at Southside High School.

Holcomb has previously coached the Panthers from 2021-2023 before leaving to go to Tuscaloosa County. He went 18-15 with playoff appearances in all three seasons at Southside. In 2023, he brought a region title to Southside with an 8-3 season.

The hire, which was made official at an Etowah County School System Board of Education meeting on Tuesday night, comes about a month after the Board of Education meeting that saw now former Southside coach Ben Stewart get relieved of his duties. Stewart led the Panthers to a 6-5 season in 2024, hosting a home playoff game before being relieved of his duties on Feb. 4.

“I 100% disagree with the administration decision going forward with this. I did not resign, I was told that I’d be relived of my duties,” Stewart said at the time.

In November 2024, Holcomb stepped away from Tuscaloosa County after going 1-9 in one of the state’s toughest regions, Class 7A, Region 3. Holcomb originally returned to Southside during a Nov. 18 board meeting and was confirmed as the Southside drivers Ed teacher. His duties included being an assistant baseball coach, and later his role expanded to helping with basketball.

At the time, Holcomb told the Gadsden Times that he was excited to return to Southside and reunite his son with his friends there.

“We are just excited to get back home. My son gets to go back and be with his friends. The opportunity to teach and coach kids, in a community that has had such a profound impact on my family and myself, is something that I’m incredibly excited about,” Holcomb wrote in a statement in November.

Holcomb has also been a head coach at his alma mater Crossville from 2016-17, going 8-13. He holds the last playoff appearance for the program that now doesn’t participate in the sport at the varsity level. After Crossville, he went over Hoover and spend two seasons there before spending the 2020 season as an offensive coordinator in Georgia at Alpharetta High School.

Holcomb holds a career record of 27-37 with four playoff appearances but he has never advanced past the first round. He has won one region title.
