Four Indian American professors— Vikram Kapoor, Kevin Desai, Bonita B. Sharma, and Vidya Sharma — figure among the nominees for the University of Texas at San Antonio’s (UTSA) prestigious University Excellence Awards for 2025.
The award honor outstanding faculty and staff achievements. The Indian American nominees have been recognized for their contributions to teaching, research, and innovation.
Vikram Kapoor, a nominee in the Teaching Excellence category, is an associate professor at the College of Engineering & Integrated Design. Kapoor, who earned his B.Tech. in Biotechnology from Jaypee Institute of Information Technology University in India, serves as the Klesse endowed professor, associate professor, and division leader of civil & environmental engineering. He also holds the role of undergraduate advisor of record in Civil & Environmental Engineering.

In the University Service category, Kevin Desai has been nominated for his contributions to the College of Sciences. Desai, who holds a B.Tech. in Computer Science and Engineering from Nirma University in India, focuses his research on collaborative virtual environments, computer vision, and virtual/augmented/mixed reality technologies. He is an assistant professor of computer science.
Bonita B. Sharma, an assistant professor of social work in the College of Health, Community & Policy, has been nominated in the Advancing Globalization category for her impactful research. Sharma’s work spans sustainability, gender equality, global health, and human mobility. Her interdisciplinary research explores the intersection of technology, leadership, and social work on a global scale, reflecting her dedication to addressing pressing societal challenges.
Vidya Sharma has been nominated in the Innovation and Impact (I-Squared) category for her groundbreaking contributions in research and development.
The 2025 University Excellence Awards ceremony will take place from 9:30 to 11 a.m. on April 30 in the H-E-B Student Union Ballrooms on the UTSA Main Campus.
