A recent workshop in Sovima, Dimapur, has signaled a significant push towards modernising Nagaland’s micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) within the apparel sector. The Apparel Technology Workshop: Redefining Tradition with Tech, held on 4th and 5th March at the Mongken Apparel Unit, was a key initiative under the World Bank-supported RAMP program, implemented by the Ministry of MSME, in collaboration with the Department of Industries and Commerce, Nagaland Industrial Development Corporation (NIDC) and the Department of Underdeveloped Areas (DUDA).
The workshop aimed to enhance market access, credit availability and capacity building for local MSMEs through the RAMP program’s Technology Clinics. These clinics provide entrepreneurs with essential technical skills and exposure to advanced machinery, fostering modernisation and competitiveness.
Fifty-eight entrepreneurs and MSMEs from across Nagaland participated in the two-day event, which focused on bridging the gap between traditional craftsmanship and contemporary technology. The workshop featured six technology clinics covering critical areas such as the fusion of handloom weaving with modern technology, fabric types, textile printing technologies, motif and pattern digitisation, apparel production workflow optimisation and sustainable production practices.
Participants gained hands-on experience with advanced machinery, including embroidery, sewing, cutting and digital textile printing equipment. They also learned to use CAD software for motif digitisation and illustrator for apparel design.
The RAMP team stressed the importance of Udyam registration for MSMEs to access credit and national schemes, encouraging participants to integrate technology to enhance efficiency and reduce production time. Yanger Lemtur, in charge of the Mongken Apparel Unit, encouraged participants to utilise the facility as a Common Facility Centre for production and brand-building.
