Dakota Johnson grew up around Hollywood, but her red carpet identity is distinctly her own. The daughter of actors Don Johnson and Melanie Griffith and granddaughter of Tippi Hedren has spent years developing a wardrobe that balances classic glamour with more daring details. Flowing gowns, sheer fabrics, sparkling embellishments and clean tailoring all appear regularly in her fashion choices. Gucci has become particularly important to her public style, although she has also worn major designs from Dior, Prada, Valentino and other fashion houses. Across premieres, festivals and awards events, Johnson consistently finds ways to make romantic dressing feel contemporary.
Her Fifty Shades era demonstrated that versatility early. For the Fifty Shades of Grey premiere, Johnson selected a long sleeved Christian Dior gown with a plunging neckline. She changed direction for Fifty Shades Darker with a simple white Prada dress, then embraced a softer mood for Fifty Shades Freed in a flowing pink Valentino creation.
Film festivals have provided some of Johnson’s most memorable fashion moments. At the Venice premiere of Suspiria, she wore a dramatic red Dior gown that matched the intensity of the occasion. Other appearances have allowed her to experiment with sequins, corsetry and voluminous silhouettes, proving that she is equally comfortable with minimal designs and more elaborate eveningwear.
Her long relationship with Gucci has become especially recognizable. Johnson has worn the Italian house for numerous premieres and major events, including a romantic organza gown for Bad Times at the El Royale and several appearances at international film festivals. At the 2022 Met Gala, she chose a crystal fringed Gucci bodysuit with a coordinating robe, combining transparency, movement and elaborate embellishment.
That same year, Johnson showed another side of her style while promoting Cha Cha Real Smooth, appearing in a crisp white blazer dress by Area. For the Vanity Fair Oscars party, she returned to Gucci in a delicate pink gown, reinforcing her ability to move easily between sharp tailoring and romantic eveningwear.
The 2024 Madame Web premiere produced one of her more daring Gucci moments, with a sheer, web inspired design that referenced the film without becoming a literal costume. At the Cannes Film Festival in 2025, she continued the partnership in a strapless fringed gown that brought movement and texture to the red carpet.
For the Zurich premiere of Splitsville, Johnson again embraced transparency in a high neck Gucci lace gown with long sleeves and a voluminous tulle skirt. The combination captured many of the elements that have defined her fashion evolution.
Johnson’s strongest red carpet looks rarely depend on one formula. Instead, she moves between romantic softness, sleek minimalism and confident transparency. That willingness to experiment while maintaining an elegant foundation has made her one of Hollywood’s most consistent modern style figures.
