Boys performing significantly better than girls in maths and science

Boys in England have opened up a significant lead against girls in maths and science performance since 2019, a study suggests.

The report from University College London (UCL), based on survey data from 2023, found that boys were performing significantly better than girls, where a previous report had them roughly neck and neck.

The findings mirror results from other countries that participated in the study, but the maths gender gap in England was the largest recorded.

The study, written by UCL researchers and published by the Department for Education, showed children in most countries scoring between 400 and 600 on the Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (Timss) scale.
