6 Years Later, Netflix’s Most Overlooked Harlan Coben Mystery Thriller Remains a Perfect One-Night Binge

If you discovered Harlan Coben after watching Fool Me Once or I Will Find You, you might assume Netflix only has a handful of his thrillers waiting for you to binge over the weekend. That would be understandable. Netflix has made so many Coben adaptations, and there are a lot to keep up with. There are currently 13 Harlan Coben series on Netflix, spanning six countries and six languages; the 2026 release, I Will Find You, has become one of his most successful Coben releases.

However, buried somewhere in that increasingly crowded collection is The Woods, a six-episode Polish mystery thriller that was released in 2020 and deserves more attention than it gets. It doesn’t have the instant recognition of Fool Me Once, and it arrived before Netflix entered its “Coben era.” Six years later, it remains one of the easiest shows to recommend, especially when you want a mystery thriller you can finish in one sitting.

The Woods follows a Warsaw prosecutor named Paweł Kopiński, who is called in to identify a body. The case pulls him straight back into the unsolved disappearance of his sister, Kamila, from summer camp decades earlier. The show works so well because it’s disciplined about not overstaying its welcome. A six-episode run is the perfect length since it allows the miniseries to move between 1994 and 2019 without the dual timelines confusing you. Every episode earns its place in the larger narrative.

That restraint is actually pretty rare in Coben’s world. His books tend to pile one plot twist on top of another, and the TV versions sometimes buckle under the weight of trying to fit them all into a six-to-eight episode runtime. Coben even has a rule for his thriller adaptations: he prefers that they only have one season.

However, The Woods never stumbles. It’s moody without being dreary and is emotionally grounded in a way a lot of “missing person” thrillers aren’t. It treats its cold case as something that actually haunts the people involved instead of a mere plot device. The Woods is arguably Coben’s most personal TV series, and the fact that it barely comes up in the “best Coben adaptations” conversations says more about subtitle fatigue than it does about the show itself.

The Woods also has an intense atmosphere. The Polish setting gives it an identity that distinguishes it from Netflix’s recent shows, while the performances by Grzegorz Damięcki and Hubert Miłkowski as the older and younger Paweł provide a sentimental hook for the central mystery. Critics noted how brilliant the series is, and The Woods currently holds an 89% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
