King Charles is back in the public eye and opening up in a new way about his love for music.

The British royal has long welcomed musicians to Buckingham Palace, and even had stars like Katy Perry, Lionel Richie and Nicole Scherzinger perform at his coronation concert. But his latest project finds His Majesty getting up close and personal about his favorite artists with Apple Music.

It’s part of a new Apple Music special called The King’s Music Room, billed as “a celebration of music from across the Commonwealth” chosen by Charles himself.

Recorded at Buckingham Palace in His Majesty’s office, The King’s Music Room features King Charles sharing some of his favorite songs and artists as he “reveals why the songs help form the soundtrack to his life.” Charles’ narration accompanies many of the tracks, as the Monarch explains his affinity for the tunes and reveals his personal connection to some of the artists featured.

The playlist includes singers like Bob Marley, Kylie Minogue, Diana Ross and Grace Jones, alongside newer artists like Davido and RAYE. Beyoncé’s “Crazy in Love,” meantime, is listed as one of Charles’ favorite songs, along with Michael Buble’s “Haven’t Met You Yet,” and older fare like Al Bowlly’s 1934 standard, “The Very Thought of You.”

The King calls Beyoncé “incomparable,” and refers to her as “a performer so exceptional that I just could not resist including her music.” He notes that she performed “Crazy in Love” when it first came out at the Prince’s Trust Fashion Rocks concert in 2003.

The final song on the King’s Music Room playlist? “Upside Down” by Ross. “When I was much younger, it was absolutely impossible not to get up and dance when it was played,” Charles says.

The King’s Music Room premiered on Apple Music 1 on March 10, and is available now to listen to on-demand with an Apple Music subscription. A subscription starts at $10.99/month but you can get a free trial here to stream King Charles’ show online for free. Students can get Apple Music for just $5.99/month after the 30-day free trial is up.

Of course, while Apple insists The King’s Music Room was always scheduled to launch this week, the timing is a little coincidental, with royal watchers noting that the show was released just days after Meghan Markle’s new Netflix series hit the air. The Duchess of Sussex has reportedly had a frosty relationship with the monarchy, though neither side has commented officially. Neither Markle nor husband Prince Harry were in attendance at Charles’ Trooping the Colour birthday celebration last year.

In a press release, Apple Music calls the special, “A musical journey that reflects His Majesty’s personal taste,” adding that the show is “sure to surprise and delight music fans everywhere, revealing a more personal side to His Majesty.”

“Throughout my life, music has meant a great deal to me,” adds King Charles III. “I know that is also the case for so many others. It has that remarkable ability to bring happy memories flooding back from the deepest recesses of our memory, to comfort us in times of sadness, and to take us to distant places. But perhaps, above all, it can lift our spirits to such a degree, and all the more so when it brings us together in celebration. In other words,” he says, “it brings us joy.”

King Charles’ new Apple Music special offers a rare opportunity to hear from the Monarch himself. Charles has largely stepped away from the public eye since revealing a cancer diagnosis last year. And unlike Prince Harry’s wildly-successful autobiography, “Spare,” the 76-year-old Charles has yet to release his own book or memoir. Amazon does have numerous books about the King that have been released in recent years, including the bestselling unauthorized biography from journalist Robert Hardman above.
