10 Best Horror Movies of All Time, According to Roger Ebert

The beloved critic Roger Ebert held the genre to a very high standard.

Described as a “terrifying new genre film, Pendulum follows young couple Patrick and Abigail, played by Gordon-Levitt and Dynevor, respectively, as they set out for a new-age retreat in New Mexico after a traumatic event. Patrick will do anything to help his wife but starts to doubt things and becomes distrustful of the retreat’s leader as Abigail falls under her spell. Becoming more and more paranoid, Abigail and Patrick have to figure out if the group’s strange spiritual practices are actually healing or a mask covering a terrifying truth that threatens them both.

Pendulum will reunite Darren Aronofsky and writer Mark Heyman, who worked together on 2010’s Black Swan. The psychological drama thriller starred Natalie Portman and Mila Kunis. Portman won an Oscar for her performance as Nina Sayers, who dreams of being a prima ballerina for the New York City Ballet. CBR ranked Black Swan’s ending as one of the 10 best in the psychological thriller genre, saying that the film “expertly balances the lightness and darkness within Nina.” In the movie, Nina starts as a sweet girl who would never go against her mother’s wishes, but in the end, everything changes.

Principal photography on Pendulum starts this month. Jacob Jaffke will produce the movie for Motel Mojave, and Dave Caplan for C2, which will also finance the film. Aronofsky will produce under his Protozoa banner.

Dynevor Will Also Star in M. Night Shyamalan’s Next Film

Dynevor is known for her role in Bridgerton as Daphne and appeared in the 2025 thriller Inheritance. She will also soon appear in A24’s dark comedy Famous with Zac Efron, which recently wrapped production. Later this year, she is also set to star in the thriller Beneath the Storm with Djimon Hounsou.

Earlier in March, news broke that Dynevor is in negotiations to co-star in another film – the untitled project from filmmaker M. Night Shyamalan and romance novelist Nicholas Sparks. The actress will co-star with Jake Gyllenhaal in the movie, which has been dubbed a supernatural romantic thriller.
