Keke Palmer’s 94% Comedy On RT Is The Best Tyler Perry Movie In 16 Years & He Wasn’t Even Involved

Lawrence Lamont’s comedy One of Them Days, which stars Keke Palmer and SZA in its lead roles, has rightly received critical acclaim since it was released in January. This hilarious tale of sisterhood in the face of one domestic disaster after another, which features Katt Williams in a heavily-costumed comic turn as a homeless sage, bears many hallmarks of a movie involving Williams’ comedy rival Tyler Perry. It also has a higher Rotten Tomatoes score than any Tyler Perry in the past 16 years.

Perry’s acting role in the 2014 psychological thriller Gone Girl is the only movie involvement he’s had since 2009 that even comes close to the acclaim One of Them Days has received. He initially distinguished himself as a Hollywood movie producer by producing Lee Daniels’ highly acclaimed drama film Precious. Since then, he’s produced a collection of movies spanning several genres which have all failed to garner any sort of critical recognition. One of Them Days, meanwhile, which is co-produced by American Fiction and Barbie actor Issa Rae, has become one of 2025’s best movie success stories, seemingly from nowhere.

One Of Them Days Feels Like A Tyler Perry Movie In Many Ways

Its Cast, Characters And Plot Are Similar To Some Of Perry’s Best-Loved Work

Despite its modest $14 million budget, One of Them Days has broken records on Rotten Tomatoes, proving to be a genuine hit with critics, and collecting a decent box-office return to boot. The movie follows a disastrous day in the life of housemates Dreux and Alyssa, who are struggling enough as it is before their landlord evicts them because Alyssa’s boyfriend runs off with their rent movie. The two of them have to navigate various perils and pitfalls to try and rescue their situation.

One Of Them Days Ending Explained: Where Do Dreux And Alyssa End Up?

One of Them Days is an extremely solid comedy, with an ending that, while not too complex, has enough going on that is worth discussing in depth.

The plot for One of Them Days features the same kind of relationship drama, including scenes of callous boyfriend betrayal, and female solidarity, as Tyler Perry’s eight-season hit TV series Sistas, only with a lighter tone, snappier comic timing, and frenetic and farcical action sequences sprinkled into the mix. Like Perry’s show, however, the premise for One of Them Days is rooted in the ordinary struggles of young, black female friends, from the jobs they’re aiming for but aren’t sure they want, to the parasitic boyfriend who really doesn’t deserve them.

One of these central heroes is played by Keke Palmer, whose career Tyler Perry helped to launch when he gave her a part in his 2006 movie Madea’s Family Reunion. At the same time, Katt Williams’ scene-stealing performance as homeless man Lucky feels like it would fit right into one of Tyler Perry’s Madea movies. Lucky’s superfluous and dubious advice for Dreux and Alyssa adds further levity to One of Them Days, providing us with a diversion from the dire straits the women find themselves in.

One Of Them Days Is Much Better Than Tyler Perry’s Recent Movies

It Has Far More Going For It Than Perry’s Latest Genre Experiments And Madea Flicks

Although One Of Them Days might include elements of Tyler Perry’s work, it’s actually much better than anything the movie mogul has produced, written or directed in recent years. The movie is genuinely laugh-out-loud funny throughout, largely thanks to its inventive spin on a well-worn comic premise, and the comedic chemistry between its two female leads, who both own the screen with their indomitable charisma. Even its stock supporting characters are well-thought-out, and fit plausibly into its story.

Even Tyler Perry’s Madea movies have been a case of increasingly diminishing returns in recent years.

Tyler Perry’s recent movies, meanwhile, have largely focused on his forays into different film genres with decidedly mixed results. His 2024 true-story war movie The Six Triple Eight is by far the best feature-length release he’s put out recently, but even this film is hamstrung by the way Perry directs it. His legal thrillers Mea Culpa and Divorce in the Black, on the other hand, are downright catastrophic. Of course, Perry still has his breakthrough Madea franchise to fall back on, but even his Madea movies have been a case of increasingly diminishing returns in recent years.

Why One Of Them Days Succeeded While Tyler Perry’s Movies Have Struggled

The Comedy Is Fresh And Funny With Relatable Characters

Ultimately, One of Them Days is a fresh, clever and quick-witted comedy that pulls us into the world of its two main characters, until we’re right behind them and rooting for them all the way. It makes us empathize with Dreux and Alyssa, ensures we enjoy their company throughout its 97 minutes, and, most importantly, makes us laugh. The movie isn’t funny because it leans on long-established comic characters and tropes, but because it has something new to say.

One of Them Days was scripted by Rap Sh*t, Insecure and Black Monday screenwriter Syreeta Singleton.

Unfortunately, most of Tyler Perry’s movies from the last decade don’t have as much as to say as the filmmaker’s earlier works. That is, with the sole exception of The Six Triple Eight, and even in that case it doesn’t tell its inspiring story in the most compelling way. Hopefully, the success of One of Them Days might inspire Tyler Perry to go back to the drawing board, once his next two Madea projects are out of the way.
