New Delhi: Ahead of winters, Delhi’s environment minister Gopal Rai announced a Winter Action Plan on Wednesday to curb air pollution in the city. The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP)-led Delhi government introduced a 21-point plan with measures that include emergency steps like work from home (WFH) for offices and the possibility of artificial rain.

“This year, our theme is ‘Mil Kar Chale, Pradushan Se Lade,’” Rai stated, emphasizing that the AAP government would begin implementing the plan immediately. The winter action plan also includes using drones to monitor pollution levels in high-pollution areas. These drones will help identify the causes of air quality issues in real time.

Key measures in Delhi Winter Action Plan 2024:

  1. Drone monitoring: Drones will be used to locate pollution sources in hotspots, and anti-smog guns will be placed in these areas more frequently this year.
  2. Anti-dust campaign: The government will launch a campaign to control dust pollution and will deploy road-sweeping machines across Delhi.
  3. Firecracker ban: A ban on firecrackers will be enforced again this year, and a notification will be issued to ensure compliance.
  4. Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP): GRAP stages will be activated, and 588 teams will work to stop open burning of garbage.

Rai also mentioned that in case pollution levels spike to hazardous levels, the government would encourage offices to adopt work-from-home policies and suggest reducing the use of private vehicles. The odd-even vehicle scheme might also be introduced during peak pollution times.

Additionally, the Delhi government plans to conduct artificial rain from November 1 to 15 to improve air quality, especially during Diwali and the stubble burning period. A special task force made up of six members has been established to monitor pollution levels and take appropriate actions as needed.
