2025 Texas Film Awards celebrate the Lone Star state’s cinematic stars

AUSTIN, Texas — Everything’s bigger in Texas, and that includes the talent on the silver screen. Earlier this month, the Austin Film Society’s Texas Film Awards rolled out the red carpet to honor the stars and filmmakers who are defining the Lone Star movie industry.

Austin icon, Richard Linklater, who founded Austin Film Society in 1985 looks back on how the organization has thrown the Texas Film Awards for the past 25 years and how it feels to celebrate 40 years of AFS

“It’s crazy. You know, when you have to think about it, you know, it’s like, I will go back to my 24 year old self in my room, renting films on my credit card and showing them at the Dolby Theater. And, you know, the me and my roommates putting up fliers and how much fun it was, how much we were driven by just passion for cinema,” Linklater said.

“We grew the way Austin grew and and, here we are today, one of the worlds, you know, certainly in this country, one of the biggest film organizations, the way the community always shows up for us and supports us. It’s very touching.”

The awards highlighted the contributions of those who have made a significant impact on the film industry, both in Texas and beyond. Actor Elijah Wood attended to present the award to Tim and Karrie League. We talked to him about the impact of Austin’s film culture and industry.

“It’s global. I mean, you know, certainly what Tim and Karrie have done with the Alamo Drafthouse and then Fantastic Fest that extends around the world. There are filmmakers that come to Austin to show their films to audiences and in many ways sort of for the first time,” he said.

Wood continued, “This is a real incubator. It’s a very, very special place. Austin, Texas, in that regard, and it’s meaningful for the industry globally.”

From action blockbusters like “Fast and Furious,” “LOST” and “Avatar” to the Austin red carpet, actor Michelle Rodriguez shared what it means to her to be brought in and celebrated by this community.

“I always felt like an outsider and I never, you know, quite felt like I had a home, you know? But every now and then I bump into people like Robert Rodriguez or Vin Diesel or Jim Cameron, who just look me in the eyes and said, nah, you’re not as crazy as people think you are. And then, I’m like, I feel a little more accepted each time,” said Rodriguez.

Attendees were treated to a night of glitz and glamour as the Texas Film Awards once again proved that the state’s film industry is as vibrant and dynamic as ever.
