I Rewatched Marvel’s $61M Box Office Bomb That Is Now A Hit On Netflix And I Still Think It Has Some Of The Best Superhero Movie Action Scenes

A Marvel movie that failed at the box office has become a hit upon arriving at Netflix, and that prompted me to rewatch it, confirming that it is still one of the best superhero movies where action is concerned. Be it in Marvel Studios’ films, DC’s movies, Sony’s Spider-Man Universe, or any other superhero live-action franchise, action is important. While these stories need strong emotional hooks to resonate, if a superhero project does not present intense fights or exciting powers, it will most likely fail to join the list of the best entries in the genre.

That is not to say that just because a superhero movie is action-packed, it will be a success. Multiple films in Sony’s Spider-Man Universe tried that approach. While Venom was a big hit, grossing $856 million worldwide, the other installments in Tom Hardy’s Marvel franchise faced diminishing returns. The rest of the SSU went down a similar trajectory, which led to no more entries in the shared universe expected to be part of the future Marvel movies of the next few years. However, upon rewatching an SSU film, I maintain that it has some of the best superhero movie action.

Kraven The Hunter Has Found New Life At Netflix

The Movie Was The SSU’s Biggest Box Office Bomb

Kraven the Hunter is the SSU movie in question. The film had a reported budget of $110 million. However, Aaron Taylor-Johnson’s second time as a Marvel character failed to even make its budget back, with Kraven the Hunter ending its box office run with only $61.9 million (Via Box Office Mojo). That number is terrible, as it means that the SSU movie lost Sony over a hundred million dollars. Adding to that, the film became the shared universe’s biggest box office bomb, even though I think it was better than Morbius and Madame Web.

While Kraven the Hunter was a failure in theaters, I was surprised to discover that the movie had found a second wind on streaming. Kraven the Hunter entered Netflix’s Top Ten Movies list upon its arrival on the streamer. Taylor-Johnson’s SSU movie ranked third on the list, with only the Russo Brothers’ The Electric State and the new SpongeBob SquarePants spinoff, Plankton: The Movie, above it. The streaming numbers make Kraven the Hunter a hit on Netflix, and I think that a lot of those who did not watch it in theaters can now see how great the action is.

The Action Sequences Are Easily The Movie’s Best Aspect

Say what you will about Kraven the Hunter‘s story, but if there is one element of the film that absolutely works from start to finish, it is the action department. The SSU movie had a lot more freedom to play with that due to its R-rated nature. We have seen how that can lead to intense action sequences with projects like the Deadpool movies, Logan, and both Daredevil TV shows. I thought that was the right move for Kraven the Hunter, as it suits the character’s story and darker tone.

Kraven is a brutal fighter who acts a lot like the animals he has studied throughout his life in the wild. As such, he obliterates many of those hunting him in the film. The action scenes in Kraven the Hunter are bloody, visceral, and downright creative. Kraven’s nature allows him to set up a wide range of traps for his enemies, which results in a series of unpredictable deaths. It’s great. Even though I was not always gripped by Kraven the Hunter‘s story, I loved the brutal nature of the fights and how intense and bloody the action was.

Aaron Taylor-Johnson Has Shared His Idea For A Future Marvel Movie

After Kraven the Hunter proved itself a box office failure, a lot has changed. Sony’s Spider-Man Universe is reportedly over, with the diminishing returns of the Venom trilogy — which has been concluded — and the negative performance of the other Spider-Man characters’ spinoffs leading to that decision. Sony will now switch its focus when it comes to Marvel properties, with Spider-Man variants being reported as the studio’s next main event. That includes the conclusion of the animated Spider-Verse trilogy, Tom Holland’s future as Peter Parker in the MCU, and more projects like Nicolas Cage’s upcoming Spider-Man Noir series.

Based on that, it is almost impossible for Kraven the Hunter to get a sequel. That said, I know the perfect way for Taylor-Johnson to reprise his Marvel role. Kraven was considered for Spider-Man: No Way Home, but Marvel Studios was blocked from using the character by Sony. With the SSU over and the Multiverse Saga active in the MCU, Taylor-Johnson’s Kraven could cross over for a Spider-Man movie that adapts Kraven’s Last Hunt. Taylor-Johnson has said he wants to adapt the iconic story, which would fit with Spider-Man’s current MCU situation, and bring back Kraven the Hunter‘s action-packed nature.
