Lilo & Stitch Director Reflects on the ‘Staying Power’ of the Disney Animated Movie

Lilo & Stitch director Chris Sanders couldn’t be happier that the 2002 animated movie has continued to resonate with Disney fans more than 20 years later. While promoting his new animated feature The Wild Robot, Sanders — who is also the voice actor for Stitch — opened up about the staying power of the franchise’s beloved titular characters.

During an interview with Collider, Sanders touched on the franchise’s legacy and returning as the voice of Stitch in the upcoming live-action remake. “I like that the story and the characters have endured. It was my wish that the story and characters would have staying power, and I’m really glad that they have,” he said. “I’ve never stopped doing the voice. I do it for all the different stage shows and parades and everything, and it’s nice to, several times a year, be able to revisit that character.”

Released in 2002, Lilo & Stitch focuses on its title characters: Lilo Pelekai, an orphaned Hawaiian girl being raised by her struggling older sister, Nani, after their parents’ deaths; and Experiment 626, the genetically engineered extraterrestrial creature who Lilo adopts as her dog and renames “Stitch”. Through the course of the movie, the pair develop a close bond through the Hawaiian concept of ʻohana, causing Stitch to reconsider his intended destructive purpose to keep his newfound family together. Lilo & Stitch was a major success for Disney, grossing over $270 million worldwide and receiving a nomination for Best Animated Feature at the Oscars.

Lilo & Stitch Live-Action Remake Coming in 2025

A live-action remake of Lilo & Stitch was first reported to be in development in 2018, although casting and filming did not begin until five years later, in 2023. Dean Fleischer Camp, best known for helming the Oscar-nominated Marcel the Shell with Shoes On, directed the upcoming Lilo & Stitch remake from a screenplay by Chris Kekaniokalani Bright. Maia Kealoha will make her feature-length acting debut in Lilo & Stitch, playing the role of Lilo opposite Sanders’ Stitch.

The cast also includes Zach Galifianakis as the voice of Dr. Jumba Jookiba, the Kweltikwan mad scientist creator of Stitch; Billy Magnussen, who previously appeared in Disney’s live-action remake of Aladdin, as the voice of alien special agent, Pleakley; Courtney B. Vance as social worker Cobra Bubbles; Sydney Agudong as Nani Pelekai; and Kaipo Dudoit as David Kawena; among others.

The live-action remake will also include several stars from the 2002 animated film. Besides Sanders, Tia Carrere and Jason Scott Lee, the original voices of Nani and David, are set to appear in supporting roles, portraying Mrs. Kekoa and a luau manager, respectively. Amy Hill, who previously voiced Mrs. Hasagawa in the animated film and television series, will also have a role in the new movie, portraying a new character named Tūtū who is David’s grandmother.

The animated Lilo & Stitch is available to stream on Disney+, while the live-action remake is scheduled to hit theaters in Summer 2025.
