Democratic lawmaker hits back amid claims staffer threw out young girls’ letters begging for trans athlete ban
Nevada lawmaker Elaine Marzola is hitting back at claims her staff disposed of letters from local girls calling to ban transgender athletes from female sports.
The controversy hit social media Tuesday after a group of local student athletes visited the capitol building in Carson City to share letters supporting a bill aimed at banning transgender athletes from their preferred gender classification.
According to a post by Las Vegas Review-Journal columnist Victor Joecks, one girl’s mother witnessed the incident first-hand.
‘These brave young women received a very rude reception in one Democrat office, according to mom Annie Chavez,’ wrote Joecks.
Joecks says he was told by Chavez that someone from Marzola’s office crumpled the letters ‘right in front of the girls and threw them on the floor.’
But while Joecks has called the incident ‘shameful,’ Marzola and others are refuting the claim outright.

‘The allegations against my staff and I are a blatant lie perpetrated by an unserious opinion columnist who wasn’t even in the legislative building,’ read a statement from Marzola. ‘My staff and I always treat everyone with the utmost respect and dignity. Because I was in meetings all afternoon, I didn’t interact with Ms. Chavez (Ava’s mother Annie Chavez) or her daughter, so they must be mistaken.’
Logan Service, a Nevada state legislature commerce and labor committee manager, has since challenged Joecks’ reporting as well.
‘At that time, I was present when several young children entered Room 4108 to deliver letters intended for Chair Marzola,’ Service wrote in a statement to Fox News. ‘Upon their arrival, they were respectfully greeted by Chair Marzola’s attaché. The attaché asked how they could assist, at which point the children handed over the letters.
‘The attaché thanked the children and assured them the letters would be delivered to Chair Marzola,’ the statement continued. ‘The letters were then placed into the office mailbox—a secure and routinely used location where both the attaché and the Assemblymember retrieve materials each evening.’
The girls were joined at the Nevada state capitol by former University of Nevada volleyball player Sia Liilii, who has been living with the Chavez family. Liilii has since backed up Chavez’s version of events.
‘After hearing the rustling papers, I looked back and [17-year-old Nevada girls’ athlete Kendall Lewis] said ‘she just threw it away,” Liilii told Fox News.
Nevada Lieutenant Governor Stavros Anthony shared photos of the girls on the state capitol
Liilii also rejected Marzola’s denial.
‘She wasn’t in the site of what had happened and the fact that she wants to come after the character of girls who were just there to give their letters peacefully and give her letters saying why they love sports so much and why they want it to be single-sex spaces, it’s kind of questionable, especially since she gets to make decisions for how we gets to play our her sports,’ Liilii said.
‘I hope she looks into the other side as well and doesn’t just come after our character.’
Liilii was a member of one of several collegiate volleyball teams that opted to forfeit in 2024 rather than face San Jose State’s Blaire Fleming, who is reportedly transgender.
Nevada passed a sweeping equal rights amendment in 2022 allowing trans athletes to compete in their preferred gender classification.
