One of M. Night Shyamalan’s Best Movies Set to Invade Hulu Next Month

Fans of M. Night Shyamalan’s 2002 film, Signs, can “Swing away” like Joaquin Phoenix’s character, Merrill on Oct. 1. The classic alien film is set to hit the streamer on that date, right in time for the Halloween season. CBR ranked Signs No. 3 on a list of Shyamalan’s 10 best films.

Sometimes, an alien invasion story can be difficult to pull off and still be taken seriously. However, Signs takes the story to new levels of science fiction, faith and the nature of the universe. The movie stars Mel Gibson as Graham Hess a widowed former reverend, who has his world rocked when he finds crop circles on his Pennsylvania farm.

He and his children Morgan and Bo, played by Rory Culkin (Black Mirror) and Abigail Breslin (Little Miss Sunshine) along with Graham’s brother, Merrill (Phoenix) use Bo’s old baby monitor to hear communications from extraterrestrials.

In addition to aliens, the movie delves into the difference between coincidences, signs or omens and faith. The aliens do turn out to be hostile, and in a classic Shyamalan twist, which some may find ridiculous, it’s determined that the aliens can be defeated with a simple liquid – which Bo tends to always leave around the house.

Signs was seen as different at the time because alien invasion movies were typically filled with explosions and special effects. Signs, however, comes off as more of a drama, and audiences become connected to the plot as it builds throughout the movie.

M. Night Shyamalan Is Famous for His Twists

Shyamalan had a breakout hit with 1999’s The Sixth Sense, starring Bruce Willis and Haley Joel Osmet. The movie was famous for its final twist, something Shyamalan himself has become famous for over the years with films like The Village and Old.

His latest feature, Trap, starring Josh Hartnett and Ariel Donoghue, will stream on Max starting Oct. 25. The film focuses on Hartnett’s character, Cooper Adams, a father who takes his daughter (Donoghue) to see her favorite pop star in concert. Turns out, the concert is a trap planned by the authorities to catch Cooper, who is known as “The Butcher.” The pop star in the film, Lady Raven, is played by Shyamalan’s real-life daughter, Saleka Shaymalan.

Shyamalan’s not slowing down anytime soon. He took to Instagram earlier this month to thank his audiences for their support and to say he’s already started prepping for film No. 17. The director showed off a notebook that he’s using to jot down ideas for his new flick.

Fans of the writer/director can also catch 2008’s The Happening, on Hulu starting in October. The movie, starring Mark Wahlberg and Zooey Deschanel, focuses on a strange and unexplained natural phenomenon that is causing mass suicides. John Leguizamo co-stars. Hulu will also stream another Shyamalan film, Unbreakable. Released in 2000, as a new take on a superhero movie, it stars Bruce Willis, Samuel L. Jackson and Robin Wright.
