Music programme for dementia patients coming to Leigh

Manchester Camerata’s Music in Mind initiative has joined with Age UK Wigan Borough to bring the service to the Turnpike Gallery in Leigh.

The Music Café sessions will run every Monday at 2pm, offering moments of joy and connection for attendees.

Developed with the University of Manchester, Music in Mind uses principles from music therapy and has achieved international recognition.

Manchester Camerata has previously helped to set up similar programmes in Hong Kong, Taiwan, Sweden, and Japan.

The new arrangement in Wigan is part of Manchester Camerata’s £1.1 million Centre of Excellence for Music and Dementia project.

This is supported by the Power of Music Fund, Mayor Andy Burnham, and NHS Greater Manchester.

The funding will cover three years of musical activities across Greater Manchester, which started in October 2024.

With more than 940,000 people across the UK living with dementia, the initiative aims to improve the lives of those affected while reducing the need for health services.

For more information about the sessions, contact Age UK Wigan Borough at 01942 615880 or visit Music in Mind for a full list of the café’s upcoming programmes.
