Stroud author P.D. Shepherd to release new memoir, Patrick
The book, titled Patrick, is set for release on Monday, April 28, and offers a detailed insight into Shepherd’s professional journey.
The author, born and bred in Stroud, shares his experiences as a senior support worker and a filmmaker for healthcare and humanitarian organisations.
He recounts his observations and emotions from being at the centre of disaster response efforts across Europe, Africa, and Asia.
Shepherd also discusses the emotional toll taken by working in such demanding environments.
The memoir delves into periods of self-medication, therapy, and recovery, while shedding light on pressing humanitarian crises.
The author also opens up about his neurodiversity, and how it shaped his childhood, education, and career.
P.D. Shepherd, a multimedia producer, painter, and author, and has worked extensively across Europe, Africa, and Asia, documenting stories on themes like health, agriculture, migration, and conflict.
Mr Shepherd said: “I started writing this book in my head when I was working in homeless hostels, nearly twenty years ago.
“I was seeing so much pain, trauma, and inequality.
“I thought people might be interested to read some of my observations and feelings about that time.”
The author reflects on the challenges of writing the book, and how embarking on a personal journey of self-awareness through therapy helped him to be more open about his experiences.
He said: “I tried to write this book several times over the years, but I wasn’t conscious of how much my own life had become interwoven with the issues I was covering.
“I wasn’t ready to share my own experiences around self-medication, mental health, trauma, and neurodiversity.
“It wasn’t until I started therapy that I opened up about these things.
“I was also trying to bury unprocessed trauma from my experiences in childhood and adolescence. School felt like a cruel place for neurodiverse children in the 1980s and 90s.”
Mr Shepherd hopes that his memoir will not only be an enjoyable read but also serve as a source of help and engagement for readers.
