UN Constructs 45 Water Canals Spanning 100 Kilometers in Rural Afghanistan

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) has announced that approximately 45 water canals spanning a total length of 100 kilometers have been constructed in rural areas of Afghanistan in 2024.

In a statement released on Sunday, April 6, the organization stated that these canals have provided access to drinking water for around 37,000 families.

According to the statement, the construction of these canals was financially supported by Japan.

The statement further noted that the canal construction has also created employment opportunities for residents of Afghanistan’s rural communities.

UNDP Afghanistan added that the canals were built by local residents using a “food-for-work” approach, with the aim of promoting sustainable livelihoods.

Earlier, on March 21, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) reported that approximately 33 million people in Afghanistan are facing severe water shortages.
