China, Spain discuss building partnership – Solomon Star News
CHINESE President Xi Jinping has expressed China’s readiness to build on its 20-year-old comprehensive strategic partnership with Spain to make the framework more resilient and dynamic to serve the wellbeing of both countries, inject impetus into the China-European Union (EU) relations and make greater contributions to world peace and development.
President Xi articulated the significance of this comprehensive strategic partnership and China’s readiness to ensuring its resiliance and dynamism when he met with Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez of Spain, an EU-member country, in Beijing on Friday 11 April.
“This year marks the 20th anniversary of the comprehensive strategic partnership between China and Spain. China stands ready to work with Spain to build a more strategically resilient and dynamic comprehensive strategic partnership to better serve the well-being of both peoples, inject impetus into the China-EU relations, and make greater contributions to world peace, stability and development,” the Chinese President said.
President Xi said both China and Spain are positive supporters of multi-lateralism and open cooperation, and it is important for both sides to work together to build a just and equitable global governance system, safeguard world peace and security, and promote common development and prosperity.
He pointed out that, “China always sees in the European Union an important pole in the multipolar world and China is a major country that explicitly supports the unity, development, and growth of EU.”
The Chinese President told the Spanish PM that in the current context, referring to the complex and volatile international trade situation brought about by the United States’ so-called reciprocal tariffs, it is of great practical significance to strengthen the China-EU partnerships of peace, growth, reform and civilisation.
“China and the EU should see each other as partners and embrace open cooperation. China would like to celebrate with the EU the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations, build on past achievements, and move the relationship towards strategic stability and mutual success, so as to better benefit the peoples of both sides and the international community at large.”
President Xi said there are no winners in tariff wars and that going against the world will only lead to self-isolation, adding that China’s development over the past seven decades is a result of self-reliance and hard work, not favours from others.
He added that China does not flinch from any unjust suppression and no matter how the external environment changes, China will remain confident, stay composed and concerntrate on managing its own affairs well.
President Xi said both China and EU are major economies in the world and staunch supporters of economic globalisation and free trade, adding that with combined economic output exceeding one-third of the global total, the two sides have already formed a strong economic symbolic relationship.
“China and the EU should step up to their international responsibilities, jointly safeguard economic globalisation and the international trade environment and jointly reject unilateral and bullying actions. China and the EU should defend not only their own legitimate rights and interests, but also international faireness and justice, and international rules and order,” he added.
Spanish PM Sanchez acknowledged the comprehensive strategic partnership between Spain and China over the last 20 years and the respect both countries have for each other and their engagement in friendly cooperation, and reaffirmed Spain’s readiness to elevate its bilateral relations with China to new heights.
He acknowledged that under the leadership of President Xi, China has achieved remarkable accomplishments in development and made significant contributions to global prosperity and stability and reaffirmed that Spain values its relationship with China, and firmly upholds the one-China policy.
Spanish PM Sanchez said China is an important cooperation partner of the EU and Spain has always supported the stable development of the EU-China relations.
He said the EU is committed to open and free trade, uphold multilateralism, and opposes unilateral tariff impositions and agreed with President Xi that “there are no winners in trade wars.”
The Spanish PM added that in the complex and challenging global environment, Spain and the EU would like to enhance communication and coordination with China to safeguard international trade order, jointly meet challenges like climate change and poverty alleviation, and preserve the common interests of the international community.
Spain joined the EU in 1986. Other EU member states, include Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia and Sweden.
