The Rhodes Trust has announced the establishment of a sixth Rhodes Scholarship for India, thanks to a generous endowment from the Radhakrishnan-Rajan family. The scholarship, endowed in perpetuity, will offer Indian students the prestigious opportunity to study at the University of Oxford, with the first recipient set to arrive in 2026.
The announcement was made by Rhodes Trust CEO Dr Elizabeth Kiss during a reception in New Delhi, which was attended by key figures, including the United States Ambassador to India, Eric Garcetti, and several Rhodes Scholars Elect from India. The new scholarship honours two prominent figures, Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, whose legacy is celebrated annually on National Teachers’ Day, and Raghavachari Govindarajan, both of whom dedicated their lives to public service.
Dr Kiss highlighted the scholarship’s significance, noting, “The Rhodes Scholarships have, for more than a century, sought out exceptional young people of character from around the world and brought them to Oxford University to study, encouraging them to build bonds of friendship and to pursue lives of service.”

The scholarship was established through the generosity of Dr Mukund Rajan, Chairman of ECube Investment Advisors, and his wife, Soumya Rajan, CEO of Waterfield Advisors. Dr Mukund Rajan, a Rhodes Scholar himself, expressed his hope that this scholarship will open doors for many more Indian students in the future. “Oxford changed our lives,” he said, “we hope that this Scholarship will do just that for many more in the years ahead. Our family values underline the importance of education and a spirit of public service, and while we were not born into wealth, we hope that our act of giving will inspire others who have achieved success to also consider ways in which they can support investments in India’s future.”
The Rhodes Scholarships for India were first established in 1947. This new endowment ensures further opportunities for Indian scholars to pursue academic excellence and leadership at Oxford.
