New Rules From July 1: Car, motorcycle, other vehicle owners should know this update

The Department of Consumer Affairs has introduced new regulations under the Legal Metrology (General) Rules, 2011, designed to improve road safety and ensure fairness in traffic law enforcement. Starting on July 1, 2025, these rules will give industries and law enforcement agencies enough time to comply with the new standards.

Why it matters for vehicle owners?

Have you ever questioned whether a speeding fine was fair? These new rules are designed to make sure you’re only fined for real violations. With these guidelines, only certified, accurate, and tamper-proof speed measuring devices will be used on the roads. This means fewer unfair fines and more transparency in how traffic laws are enforced. You can drive with more confidence, knowing that speed limits are being checked with reliable technology.

Under new rulations all radar-based speed measuring devices must be checked and approved to meet certain technical standards. This makes sure they work well in all weather and can’t be tampered with. These rules follow international standards like OIML R 91 and were made with suggestions from police, companies, and consumer groups.

For the police, these rules are a big step forward. With calibrated and standardised radars, they’ll be able to issue more accurate fines, which could help build public trust in the system.

Good news for radar manufacturers

These new regulations also bring advantages for industries, particularly radar manufacturers.  By following global standards like OIML R 91, the rules give a clear set of guidelines for companies. This helps them innovate and follow the law in India, while also making it easier for Indian products to compete in international markets by ensuring good quality and performance.

Towards smarter, safer roads

These devices, which use Doppler radar technology, will now need to meet specific technical and safety standards. They must work in different weather conditions and be tamper-resistant. This is all part of India’s plan to use more technology and data in managing traffic and making roads safer.
