Pakistan’s qualification raises logistical concerns for India

Pakistan on Thursday confirmed their place in the ICC Women’s World Cup 2025 after a commanding 67-run win over Thailand in a ICC Women’s World Cup Qualifier at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore.

With the victory, Pakistan maintained a flawless record in the six-nation qualifying tournament, becoming the first team to seal their spot in the marquee event, which is scheduled to be held in India between September and November.

The tournament’s hybrid model, however, means that despite India’s hosting rights, Pakistan’s matches are not going to take place on Indian soil.

In line with an agreement reached earlier this year between the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), all of Pakistan’s matches will be hosted at a neutral venue, yet to be finalised by the International Cricket Council (ICC).

This arrangement echoes the compromise made for the ICC Men’s Champions Trophy 2025, held in Pakistan earlier this year. With the Indian men’s team unwilling to travel to Pakistan due to political tensions, their matches were played in the UAE.

The ICC mediated a deal between the two boards, resulting in a mutual agreement that any India-Pakistan fixtures in ICC tournaments till 2027 would be played at neutral venues.

As such, BCCI will now face additional logistical challenges, including the coordination of matches across different countries. This includes arrangements for broadcasting, travel, and fan engagement outside India. Furthermore, if Pakistan advance to the semifinals or the final, those matches too will have to be moved away from Indian venues.

Pakistan’s qualification also means that other teams drawn to play against them will be required to travel between India and the yet-to-be-announced neutral venue—mirroring the logistical arrangements during the Men’s Champions Trophy earlier this year.

While Indian cities like Vishakhapatnam, Thiruvananthapuram, Raipur, Indore, and Mullanpur (scheduled to host the final) are preparing to stage the rest of the World Cup, the absence of matches involving Pakistan could impact the anticipated India-Pakistan clash—typically a marquee draw for fans and broadcasters alike.
