After talk with PM Modi, Elon Musk says he will visit India soon as Tesla gears up for market entry – World News

Billionaire entrepreneur and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk announced on Saturday that he plans to visit India later this year. The confirmation came through a post on Musk’s X (formerly Twitter) account, a day after Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi mentioned having a discussion with Musk on technology and innovation.

“I am looking forward to visiting India later this year!” Musk wrote on X, responding to the Prime Minister’s earlier message.

PM Modi, Musk discuss technology

Prime Minister Narendra Modi had shared on Friday that he spoke with Musk, discussing opportunities for collaboration in technology and innovation. Though the exact timing of the conversation was not specified, the PM referred to their earlier meeting in Washington DC last year.

“Spoke to @elonmusk and talked about various issues, including the topics we covered during our meeting in Washington DC earlier this year. We discussed the immense potential for collaboration in the areas of technology and innovation. India remains committed to advancing our partnerships with the US in these domains,” Modi posted on X.

PM Modi and Elon Musk’s February meeting

Prime Minister Narendra Modi met SpaceX and Tesla CEO Elon Musk in February this year during his two-day visit to the United States. Musk was accompanied by his three children — X, Strider, and Azure — during the meeting. As a special gesture, Musk gifted PM Modi a Starship hexagonal heatshield tile, a key component used on SpaceX’s spacecraft to withstand extreme re-entry temperatures.

Tesla’s anticipated India entry

The recent telephonic conversation between PM Modi and Elon Musk comes at a time when Tesla is reportedly preparing to enter the Indian market. According to a Bloomberg report, the electric vehicle (EV) giant plans to ship a few thousand cars to a port near Mumbai in the coming months. Tesla is expected to launch its initial sales operations in key cities like Mumbai, Delhi, and Bangalore by the third quarter of this year.

Ongoing talks on tariffs and expansion

Tesla’s India entry aligns with ongoing discussions between India and the US regarding import tariffs on EVs, a crucial factor shaping the carmaker’s long-term strategy in the country. Following PM Modi’s meeting with Musk, Tesla has reportedly ramped up hiring for showroom and delivery-related roles in India, indicating growing momentum in its expansion plans.
