Wigan Athletic handed transfer checklist involving Stoke City’s Nial Ennis

This article is part of Football League World’s ‘Terrace Talk’ series, which provides personal opinions from our FLW Fan Pundits regarding the latest breaking news, teams, players, managers, potential signings and more…

Wigan Athletic have endured a disappointing season in League One.

The Latics relieved Shaun Maloney of his duties in March, having failed to get his side competing for a swift return to Championship football since their relegation in 2022/23.

Former Preston North End boss Ryan Lowe was the chosen successor, but he too has also struggled to hit the ground running at The Brick Community Stadium.

As such, Wigan have faded into bottom half obscurity in the third tier, ahead of what will be a vital summer transfer window ahead.

“I imagine” – Wigan Athletic dream summer transfer window outlined

We asked our Wigan Athletic fan pundit, Corey Bissell: ‘What would a dream summer transfer window look like for your club?’

Bissell said: “A dream summer 2025 window for me, would include replacing Sam Tickle well should he leave, which I imagine he will.

“It would involve getting wing-backs that can play this Ryan Lowe system, and it would involve getting strikers who can score goals.

“I’ve seen the report about us eyeing up Niall Ennis, which is music to my ears.

“Obviously, a player who’s played under Ryan Lowe before, a player who understands his way of playing, and a player that has scored bundles of goals at this level.

“So that was really good to see.”

Wigan Athletic facing pivotal summer transfer window

Lowe is preparing to enter his first summer transfer window as Wigan boss this summer, and it has the feel of being one of the most important ones in recent times.

Having suffered two frustrating League One campaigns following their Championship relegation in 2023, the Latics know they need to get moving in the right direction again.

In Lowe, they have a well-respected manager at EFL level given his respective success with Preston North End and Plymouth Argyle respectively, and his name will surely be a major draw for players looking for a League One move.

Therefore, this summer window has the feeling of being a real watershed summer as far as Wigan Athletic’s trajectory is concerned.

Get it right, and the Latics could position themselves to emerge from the pack and push for promotion next season. Get it wrong, and it could well be another long season scrapping at the wrong end of League One.
