Mayor Shelly Oberoi Demands Urgent Road Condition Report from MCD Amid Pollution Crisis | Delhi News

NEW DELHI: Mayor Shelly Oberoi issued a two-days ultimatum to the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) commissioner Ashwani Kumar for submitting a comprehensive report on the city’s road maintenance and construction works on Saturday, while expressing displeasure over the despairing condition of internal roads falling under the jurisdiction of the MCD in Delhi.
Mayor warned that further delays could exacerbate the city’s pollution crisis. “It has come to my notice that most of the MCD roads are in serious despair. Not only is this making travel difficult for all residents of Delhi, but it has also put them at risk of accidents due to potholes. Besides, broken roads also lead to the suspension of road dust, which is a major contributor to air pollution in Delhi,” she stated in a letter to the commissioner.
“It is unacceptable that such a routine matter of maintenance and construction of MCD roads in the national capital isn’t being carried out in a timely manner. Any further delay in carrying out these works will adversely affect pollution levels in Delhi,” she stated further.
MCD has kept a budgetary provision of Rs 1,000 crore for road maintenance and another Rs 500 crore under the mayor’s discretionary fund, to be utilised for the revamp of MCD roads in the current financial year 2024-25.
“Considering this, the commissioner MCD is directed to share the status of funds utilised for maintenance and construction of MCD roads in two working days, latest by Monday (Sept 30) till 5 pm.
The report should specifically mention what are the different budget heads under which funds for road projects have been allocated in the current financial year and the status of the expenditure incurred to date. Further, if money hasn’t been spent from any budget head meant for maintenance and construction of MCD roads, what were the reasons,” said Oberoi.
Replying to this, MCD officials accepted that the condition of roads in colonies is not generally good. “MCD needs funds so the Mayor may please use her good office for the release of funds from the Delhi govt. Work relating to roads in the unauthorised colonies has been done by the Delhi govt in the past but there is no responsibility with respect to their repair. However, the engineering department is taking up pothole repair on priority,” said MCD officials.
The Mayor claimed that several road projects have been approved by her in the current financial year for repair through the mayor’s discretionary fund. “I have asked for a project-wise status on the implementation of each of these road projects,” she added.
