Renault is here to stay in India — Francisco Hidalgo – Car News

Francisco Hidalgo, the VP of Sales and Marketing at Renault India says that the French carmaker is here to stay and their approach will be aggressive.

Renault, having been in India for a while, is planning a complete revamp and stepping up its gameplay. Having inaugurated its new design studio in Chennai, Renault is planning on launching five new vehicles in India, which will consist of new and updated versions of its existing models.

The new launches will be Renault’s first in three years, and Renault is looking at a segment where there are only a few players with one of its upcoming models, a compact SUV. Alongside the launch of the new C-SUV, the Triber, Kiger, and Kwid are also expected to get updates.

Renault’s forward plans

Renault entered the Indian market many years ago with a product that became a smashing hit — the Duster. Over the years, the vehicle did not age gracefully and soon, its life ended in India. The story was the same with the Kwid, however, there were a few updates that kept the product alive. Now, Renault is taking a more proactive approach, and had also announced a Rs 5,300 crore investment earlier this year.

Now, with a new focus, Renault is looking to gain market share in India. Currently, it holds about 1 percent market share and Renault is looking at increasing that to 5 percent, which is selling around 10,000 units more. And this is just the start. For this, Renault is banking on its expertise and an offensive approach. New vehicle developments will be faster, and products will cater to markets such as India, as Francisco Hidalgo, the VP of Sales and Marketing at Renault India says. The market, especially India, changes fast and delays for a new vehicle can potentially make it an outdated model upon launch.

Renault has understood the potential of the Indian market and has seen the lack of players in specific segments, and is targeting them. So far, the three products sold by Renault – Kwid, Triber, and Kiger – have catered to a specific segment and budget. Renault is positive about its approach and thinks that around six vehicles in its lineup will be ideal for a start. That said, a mix of powertrains will also be seen — ICEs, EVs, and hybrids.

Renault is also focusing on its exports with the new approach and currently, Renault is making cars for the global markets. Renault is confident that India is a huge market and also wants to localise a lot of components. For Renault, India has everything a carmaker is looking for — software development, talent, man power, and the most important aspect, a market. So Renault is here to stay.
