FIFA unveils World Football Week as global tribute to football’s power to unite

FIFA has officially launched the inaugural World Football Week, a global celebration scheduled to run from 21 to 25 May 2025, aimed at uniting fans, players, and communities through the universal language of football.

Themed “Together, We Are Stronger,” the initiative invites everyone—from grassroots clubs to national teams—to come together for five days of action, connection, and shared passion for the beautiful game.

The week builds upon the United Nations-recognized World Football Day (25 May) and was proposed by FIFA President Gianni Infantino in 2024 as a way to extend the celebrations beyond a single day. Beginning on 21 May—the date FIFA was founded in 1904—the festivities will culminate on 25 May, marking both UN World Football Day and the historic opening of the 1924 Paris Olympics, the first Olympic football tournament organised by FIFA and a key precursor to the inaugural FIFA World Cup in 1930.

Speaking on the significance of this initiative, President Infantino said: “World Football Week is more than just a celebration of the game we love; it’s a celebration of unity. Under the theme ‘Together, We Are Stronger,’ we honour football’s extraordinary power to bring people together. Whether you’re playing with friends or cheering from the sidelines, you’re part of a global community that football connects.”

Infantino extended his gratitude to the Group of Friends of Football and the UN General Assembly, including then-President Dennis Francis, for supporting the proposal to expand World Football Day into a full week of global celebration.

“Thanks to the support of the UN and our Member Associations, we can now give the world more time to experience the joy, peace, and sense of togetherness that football brings,” Infantino added.

FIFA Secretary General Mattias Grafström echoed these sentiments. “World Football Week is a special opportunity for communities to unite through the shared joy of football. We’re grateful for the dedication and creativity of our Member Associations and partners who are helping to bring this celebration to life around the world.”

To support the global football community in participating, FIFA has developed a comprehensive digital celebration toolkit. Designed for Member Associations, football clubs, schools, sports centres, and community groups, the toolkit includes:

Guidelines on how to host local events: Ideas for inclusive football activities, branded assets like posters and social media templates, tips for promoting community participation.

The toolkit is intended to empower organisations of all sizes to organise matches, viewing parties, community festivals, and football-themed activities that reflect the spirit of unity and inclusivity.

Key Objectives of World Football Week: Unite people across all backgrounds through the power of football, foster community spirit by encouraging shared experiences, celebrate diversity and inclusion in the global football family.

World Football Week will also feature prominently at the 75th FIFA Congress in Paraguay on 15 May, where all 211 FIFA Member Associations will gather. The Delegates’ Football Tournament held during the Congress will serve as an official prelude to the week’s celebrations.
