Andrew Marr was wrong, Gaelic belongs to us all

I’m writing this column from Applecross, looking out over the Inner Sound to the islands of Raasay and Skye, a view so enchanting and bathed in a light so diffuse it’s easy to believe it’s the most beguiling place on earth.

Ceud mile fàilte, from the Highlands, then. But not if you are Andrew Marr. The broadcaster poured scorn on the Gaelification of Scotland at an event at the Labour Party conference in Liverpool.

In a question-and-answer session with the Scottish Labour leader, Anas Sarwar, Marr said it was “ridiculous” and “offensive” that bilingual signs had been erected across the central belt, which has no historical connection with the language.
