Morocco partners with India’s Tata to locally produce WhAP 8×8 armored vehicles

Morocco has partnered with India’s Tata Advanced Systems Limited (TASL) to manufacture the WhAP 8×8 armored vehicle locally.

The agreement aligns with the Moroccan King’s directives to modernize the country’s armed forces and promote self-reliance.

This partnership is set to strengthen the historical ties between Morocco and India, two emerging economies with growing defense cooperation.

The joint venture will establish TATA Advanced Systems Morocco (TASM), a new production facility dedicated to manufacturing these vehicles.

The investment agreement, encompassing financial, fiscal, and customs incentives, was signed by Moroccan ministers representing various departments, including Defense, Interior, Finance, Industry, and Investment.

The project is expected to meet both domestic demand and export to international markets, positioning Morocco as a regional hub for defense mobility equipment.

The decision to produce the WhAP 8×8 vehicles locally is expected to create 90 direct jobs and 250 indirect ones and will gradually increase local integration from 35% to 50% over the next three years.

Morocco is currently a leading military power in Africa, ranking among the top 10 countries in terms of arms capacity, according to Global Firepower. The country has expanded its military capabilities, thanks to partnerships with the United States and Israel.

Morocco is now preparing to establish new industrial complexes focused on producing battle tanks and other military equipment.

Following the legal framework approved in August 2020 for a domestic arms industry, Morocco has started allocating land for interested manufacturers for the creation of two specialized industrial zones for the production of military equipment.

These zones will be established on land provided by the housing and military equipment agency and will focus on producing weapons, ammunition, and related systems.

These zones will also accommodate other activities within the defense industry, and a sub-sector dedicated to supporting the supply chain will be created.
