Tanzania, Vietnam intensify trade ties as export volume soars to $226m 

HANOI, VIETNAM: LEADERS from Tanzania are expected to meet with their counterparts from Vietnam to discuss various issues aimed at building, promoting, and strengthening diplomatic and economic cooperation between the two countries.

The Minister for Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation, Ambassador Mahmoud Thabit Kombo, has arrived in Hanoi, Vietnam, for a three-day working visit from April 27 to 30, 2025.

Upon his arrival at Noi Bai International Airport on April 27, 2025, Minister Kombo was received by Tanzania’s Ambassador to Vietnam, Khamis Omar, who is based in the People’s Republic of China, along with senior officials from the Government of Vietnam.

The talks are expected to open up and expand new opportunities for economic and trade collaboration, including access to markets for agricultural and fishery products from Tanzania, as well as investment opportunities in the technology and industrial sectors.

The Tanzanian delegation includes officials and leaders from both the government and the private sector, such as the Executive Director of the Tanzania Investment Centre (TIC), Gilead Teri; the Director of Economic Diplomacy and International Trade at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation, Ambassador John Ulanga; and the Director of the Asia and Australasia Department, Ms. Felista Rugambwa.

Tanzania and Vietnam enjoy a strong historical relationship that has contributed to trade growth between the two nations. Statistics show that exports from Tanzania to Vietnam increased from USD 226.6m/- US dollars in 2020 to 314.2m/- US dollars million in 2024, marking a 38 percent growth over five years.

Similarly, imports from Vietnam to Tanzania grew from USD 20.4m/- US dollars in 2020 to 60m/- US dollars in 2023.

Vietnam has invested in various sectors in Tanzania, including construction, finance, manufacturing, and communications, with total investments valued at 2.362bn/US Dollars.

This investment has created employment opportunities for approximately 226,642 Tanzanians.

Vietnam officially opened its embassy in Tanzania for the first time on February 14, 1964, laying the foundation for a longstanding relationship between the two countries.
