Sierra Leone Government Explores Economic Opportunities at 3rd Iran-Africa Cooperation Conference in Tehran
Sierra Leone’s Ambassador to Iran, His Excellency Salamu Koroma, led a high-level delegation from Freetown to the 3rd Iran-Africa International Economic Cooperation Conference, currently taking place in Tehran and Isfahan provinces.
Notable members of the delegation include the Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Food Security I, Dr. Theresa Tenneh Dick, alongside senior officials from the Ministry of Health and the Deputy Minister of Communications and Civic Education.
The conference, held at the Tehran Summit Hall, attracts leaders and representatives from 38 African countries and coincides with Iran Expo 2025, the nation’s largest international trade exhibition.
In his opening remarks, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian highlighted the importance of deepening economic ties with Africa, calling for a “collaborative and brotherly partnership.” He pointed to key sectors such as oil, gas, agriculture, health, and security as areas ripe for joint investment.
“Iran is prepared to share its technological advancements and development strategies to support African nations,” said President Pezeshkian, a sentiment echoed by First Vice President, Mohammad Reza Aref and high-ranking officials from Iran’s Ministry of Industry, Mines, and Trade.
The Director of Africa Affairs at Iran’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Javad Dehghan Haghighi, underscored the significance of the conference in enhancing Iran-Africa trade. He noted Africa’s burgeoning population and wealth of natural resources as promising opportunities for economic expansion.
“Iran views Africa as a strategic partner and a vast market for goods and services,” he stated, adding that the partnership could address historical underdevelopment through targeted investments in infrastructure and skilled labor exchanges.
The conference focuses on vital sectors including petrochemicals, mining, agriculture, healthcare, and energy. Following a specialized panel session at the Persian Gulf Hall, Ambassador Koroma and his delegation visited the Iran Expo 2025 exhibition, where they engaged with multiple companies expressing interest in investing in Sierra Leone.
Those discussions are poised to create new avenues for bilateral cooperation, particularly in the areas of agriculture, healthcare, and energy development. The ongoing summit represents Sierra Leone’s commitment to forging international partnerships aimed at bolstering trade, facilitating technology transfer, and advancing economic development.
