‘Thunderbolts*,’ ‘Another Simple Favor’ — TV and movie new releases to see or skip this weekend in Canada — streaming and in theatres

From a possible resurrection of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) with Thunderbolts*, to a questionable sequel to A Simple Favor with Blake Lively and Anna Kendrick, with Another Simple Favor, some highly anticipated movies and TV shows were released this week. But while some new releases are must-watch entertainment, others maybe worth skipping for your weekend watching.

There is also the new movie, Bonjour Tristesse, starring the icon Chloë Sevigny. And let’s not forget about the new TV show from Tina Fey, The Four Seasons, on Netflix.

Each week Yahoo Canada will break down newly released TV shows and movies, recommending what to watch next, and what you may want to skip:

Thunderbolts* —

I’m certainly someone who’s been particularly uninspired by Marvel films in recent years, mainly because they’ve felt like the spectacle was more important than the story. But with Thunderbolts*, it feels like the MCU has gone back to putting the characters first.

That being said, the film is also incredibly ambitious, really diving into the mental health of the characters, looking at depression and isolation. And the final product is actually impactful and emotional when you watch the film.

Additionally, Thunderbolts* is incredibly funny, from Julia -Louis-Dreyfus to David Harbour and Florence Pugh, the comedy hits hard, but that’s also likely due to the fact that it’s a really appealing balance with the heavier elements of the story.

If you decided to abandon the MCU, Thunderbolts* is worthy of you coming back for.

Bonjour Tristesse

Based on the 1954 novel by Françoise Sagan, Durga Chew-Bose has given us a clever, alluring and stylish adaptation of the story.

There’s an appealing gentleness to the film that adds a unique mystique, and Lily McInerny as Cécile gives an incredibly amusing execution of this character, really leaning into girlhood and the coming-of-age element with exquisite emotion.

Of course, the French scenery is beautiful, but Chew-Bose’s collaboration with cinematographer Maximilian Pittner is a masterclass in framing each moment perfectly for the story, and a brilliant use of light.

The Four Seasons —

There is something comforting about a show that really focuses on the exploration of friendship, while also not shying away from a lot of the tensions we all have in our personal relationships.

If you’re thinking The Four Seasons is going to be another 30 Rock, just leave that thinking at the door, because this series is very different. It’s not necessarily about being outrageously funny, but it’s more about the placement of comedic relief in a story that’s actually particularly poignant.

But co-created by Tina Fey, Lang Fisher and Tracey Wigfield, they know exactly where we need a laugh.

The cast is incredibly talented and have a great dynamic together, but in the end it did feel like I wanted to dive deeper into these characters.

Another Simple Favor —

The movie A Simple Favor was certainly bizarre, but there was something endearing about its weirdness. Now that we’ve moved on to Another Simple Favor, bizarre has shifted to just downright weird for a story that feels like a particularly desperate attempt to shock its audience.

The film is at its best when it just lets Blake Lively and Anna Kendrick go head-to-head, leaning into this toxic friendship that was established in the first film. And Allison Janney and Elizabeth Perkins are just consistently great, but those elements can’t distract from this messy story.
