Horror Movie ‘Clown in a Cornfield” Surprises With High Rotten Tomatoes Score

The new creepy clown movie Clown in a Cornfield is already giving critics something to talk about beyond its goofy tone and the insane amounts of gore. The film had its debut at the SXSW festival this year, and it’s set to release nationwide on May 9. However, early screenings have proven that the latest “killer clown” feature is a huge hit with critics. By the time of writing, it sits at 94% on Rotten Tomatoes, a very good score for a slasher horror movie.

Clown in a Cornfield is based on Adam Cesare’s novel of the same name, which won the 2020 Bram Stoker Award in the category of Best Young Adult Novel. The film is directed by Eli Craig, who co-wrote the script with Carter Blanchard. It stars Katie Douglas, Aaron Abrams, Carson MacCormac, Will Sasso and Kevin Durand, among others. RLJE Films and Shudder are in charge of distribution, which means that Clown in a Cornfield will likely make its streaming debut on the horror-exclusive platform sometime in the future.

If disturbing movies are your thing, then you need to go on Shudder and watch the following. But you’ll be able to go through them just once.

The horror comedy follows young Quinn Maybrook, a teenager who has moved with her father to the town of Kettle Springs. At first, nothing seems off about the place, and Quinn quickly makes new friends. The problem is that, during a town celebration, the town mascot Frendo the Clown makes an appearance, and he’s not exactly all fun and joy. He’s more into slashing and dicing misbehaving teens. Nevertheless, don’t expect Clown in a Cornfield to be just like any other “clowns are evil” movie.

“We Don’t Have Any Clown Mass Slashers Other Than Michael at the Very Beginning of ‘Halloween'”

Fellow reporters at ScreenRant caught up with Cesare and Craig at the New York City premiere of the film, where each of them offered their inspiration for the book and the movie, respectively. Cesare, who managed to turn the young adult horror novel into a book series, said that Frendo’s origins stem from his love of slasher movies:

“I just love slashers. Honestly, I really just wanted to do what would a clown slasher look like? Clown slashers are few and far between other than the obvious ones, but we don’t have any clown mass slashers other than Michael [Myers] at the very beginning of Halloween.

“So it’s like, let’s see that, and what would that look like if it’s going to be a depressionary clown? It’s really working from more of an academic sense of wanting to do a clown slasher, right?”

Craig offered his inspiration for adapting Cesare’s eerie vision to the big screen. The director, whose previous films include horror comedies Tucker & Dale vs. Evil and Little Evil, said that he was inspired by the upsetting imagery of a creepy clown in front of a cornfield:

“Yeah, I just like the color palette. The color palette of a clown against a green cornfield is just meant. It’s perfect. And sometimes, if you guys watch the film, you’ll see you have to stop and catch one frame of a clown that you don’t really know is there. And you could see a little red hair just sticking out from behind a stalk of corn. It’s very creepy.”
