RTL Today – Today Radio: Rockhal’s Olivier Toth and Mathieu Moes Talk Punk, Pinot, and the Future of Luxembourg Music

Rockhal CEO Olivier Toth and Rocklab’s new head Mathieu Moes joined the Sam Steen Show this morning to share what’s next for the venue and its development arm. The conversation touched on everything from upcoming gigs to an experimental crossover between music and winemaking.

The conversation began by reflecting on Faithless’ recent appearance, an reunion of sorts following the passing of frontman Maxi Jazz that Olivier explained was especially emotional for both the band and the venue. The Rockhal, who last year created music from data, is continuing to explore new creative territory with a collaboration between Rockhal and Domaines Vinsmoselle.

In this unique project, two Pinot Blanc wines were fermented while being exposed to different styles of music. The aim was to see how sound might influence the wine’s development, highlighting the emotional and sensory parallels between live music and taste. The result is a pair of wines with distinct personalities, each shaped by the sonic environment it matured in.

The venue’s upcoming concert schedule includes some of the most talked-about names in contemporary punk and noise rock. Acts like Viagra Boys, Turnstile, and Amyl and the Sniffers represent a move toward a more raw and physical kind of live show. Toth described these bookings as a response to a growing desire for concerts that feel immediate and unapologetically intense.

Shifting focus to Rocklab, Moes outlined several new opportunities for artists. The Screaming Fields Festival is now accepting applications from young musicians aged 15 to 25. Finalists will receive mentoring, stage training, and the chance to perform at Rockhal, with additional booking opportunities available from local promoters. A new audience-voted award will also be introduced this year, giving fans a say in the outcome on the night of the event.

Moes also previewed the return of the Eurovision Songwriting Camp, which will take place in June. The camp brings together emerging and established songwriters for several days of focused collaboration and professional development, reinforcing Luxembourg’s position in the wider European songwriting community.

Whether through sensory experiments, genre-pushing concerts or artist development, Rockhal and Rocklab are clearly committed to keeping the country’s cultural scene dynamic and forward-thinking. Catch up with the full interview here:
