Durga Puja is a five-day festival, the last five days of the Navratri festival. Navratri is celebrated across the country and is dedicated to the nine forms of Navadurga. Durga Puja celebrations revolve around Shashthi, Maha Saptami, Maha Ashtami, Maha Navami, and Vijayadashami. Following the last five days of Navaratri this year, Durga Puja in 2024 is from Wednesday, October 9 to Sunday, October 13. The celebration culminates on Vijayadashami, the day when the idols of Durga are immersed in rivers or other water bodies in a ritual known as Visarjan.

During Durga Puja, puja is performed in homes and in pandals. These pandals become the center of cultural activities, including music, dance, plays, and religious rituals. The festival is also marked by the recitation of mantras, the rhythmic beats of the dhak (traditional drum), and the aroma of incense and flowers, creating an atmosphere filled with devotion and festivity. Durga Puja in Kolkata has been inscribed on the intangible cultural heritage list of UNESCO in December 2021.

Durga Puja festivities come to an end on the day of Vijayadashami when the idol of the Goddess is immersed in a water body. This symbolises the goddess’s return to her heavenly abode, while also reinforcing the belief that good will always prevail over evil.
