MINNEAPOLIS — University of Minnesota track and field sophomore hammer thrower Angelos Mantzouranis has been named the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Co-National Athlete of the Week, the organization announced on Monday.
Mantzouranis’ hammer throw mark of 78.61m (257-11) came on April 30, at Hamline’s ‘Meet of the UnSaintly’. The hammer throw competition, along with the javelin, was held at the University of Minnesota Track and Field Stadium due to the distance required for the events to be adequately ran. The throw for Mantzouranis most notably qualified the now-21-year-old sophomore for the 2025 World Championships in Tokyo, Japan, later this year. The record-breaking toss for the Greek came on his fifth attempt of the competition and moved him up to No. 3 all-time on the USTFCCCA all-time collegiate lists and is the furthest since Andras Haklits (78.63m) of Georgia back in 2002. As of May 5, other notable accomplishments that Mantzouranis achieved with his 78.61m throw include: Minnesota’s school record, Big Ten Conference record, world No. 6 this year, Greek under-23 record, facility record and NCAA No. 1 this season.
The national weekly honor for Mantzouranis is the first for a Gopher man since 2024 Olympian Matthew Wilkinson earned the distinction on March 28, 2023.
