Rochester’s Little Theatre celebrates Silent Movie Day with Pandora’s Box

Rochester, N.Y. — The Little Theatre is marking Silent Movie Day with two screenings of Georg Wilhelm Pabst’s 1929 film “Pandora’s Box,” starring Louise Brooks.

The timeless film follows the downward spiral of Lulu, a bold yet innocent showgirl whose powerful presence impacts everyone she meets. “Pandora’s Box” is considered one of silent cinema’s masterpieces.

Brooks, one the world’s most famous and recognizable silent film stars, is no stranger to Rochester.

She spent the last few decades of her life here at the invitation of James Card, the first film curator of the George Eastman House.

According to one of her biographers, Thomas Gladysz, who traveled to the George Eastman Museum in 2017 for research, Brooks lived a solitary life.

Her apartment was located right around the corner from the museum at 7 North Goodman Street.

There, she reinvented herself as a writer. She wrote a fictionalized autobiography, which, unfortunately, she destroyed. But she also wrote thousands of letters to film historians, friends, and other writers.

She wrote essays and articles for various film publications. Many of those writings were selected for the book Lulu in Hollywood.

Brooks passed away in 1985 at the age of 78. She is buried at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery on Lake Avenue.

The screenings of “Pandora’s Box” will take place on Sunday at 10:30 a.m. and 7:00 p.m.
