The University of Hong Kong (HKU) has launched the School of Computing and Data Science (CDS) to consolidate and elevate its academic and research capabilities in computing, data science, artificial intelligence (AI), statistical decision sciences, fintech, and actuarial science. This reflects HKU’s response to the increasing demand for expertise and innovation in these fields.

By merging the Department of Computer Science from the Faculty of Engineering and the Department of Statistics and Actuarial Science from the Faculty of Science, the new School seeks to take a more integrated approach to reform these interconnected disciplines while facilitating interdisciplinary research within the University and with external collaborators.
The rapid evolution of technology, especially in computing, AI, and data science, has significantly impacted various industries and economic sectors globally. HKU’s decision to establish the School of CDS is a strategic move to align itself with global educational trends and the scientific and technological strategies of Hong Kong and the broader region.
According to the Provost and Deputy Vice-Chancellor of HKU, these advancements have the potential to offer groundbreaking solutions to complex industrial and societal challenges. With the anticipated surge in demand for skilled professionals in these areas, HKU is positioning itself to be at the forefront of education and research, thereby contributing to the development of Hong Kong as a leading international hub for technology and innovation.
HKU’s newly formed School of CDS will serve as a central academic body for advancing education and fundamental research in emerging technologies. It aims to cultivate a multidisciplinary academic community that nurtures innovation and promotes research collaboration across multiple fields. The School is set to redefine education in computer science, data science, and AI by integrating these disciplines into a cohesive curriculum that addresses both current and future market needs. This interdisciplinary approach will be instrumental in training the next generation of leaders equipped with comprehensive knowledge and expertise in technology and analytics.
The Chair Professor of Artificial Intelligence has been appointed as the inaugural Director of the School of CDS. He highlighted that the School would foster a dynamic learning environment that encourages the convergence of computing, data science, and statistics. The goal is to produce graduates who are not only proficient in technical skills but also capable of driving technological advancements and contributing to societal progress through innovative solutions. Under his leadership, the School of CDS aims to spearhead initiatives that support cutting-edge research, develop industry-relevant academic programmes, and create new opportunities for collaboration with both academic and industry partners.
The School of CDS will officially begin its operations in July 2024 and plans to start admitting students in the 2025-26 academic year. It will offer eight undergraduate programmes, including a revamped Bachelor of Engineering in Computer Science. A new programme, the Bachelor of Engineering in Artificial Intelligence and Data Science, will be introduced as a standalone or AI+X double degree option, reflecting the School’s emphasis on integrating AI with other disciplines. In addition, the School of CDS will introduce three professional degrees in Decision Analytics, Risk Management, and Statistics. These programmes are designed to address the growing demand for specialised knowledge and technical skills in data-driven decision-making and risk assessment.
The School will also implement AI literacy micro-credentials for all incoming HKU undergraduate students from 2025-26, ensuring that graduates across various disciplines possess foundational AI skills. At the postgraduate level, the School intends to develop new programmes in close collaboration with industry stakeholders to ensure they remain relevant to evolving market requirements.
With this comprehensive suite of programmes and initiatives, HKU’s School of CDS aims to become a key player in advancing technological education and fostering innovation, preparing students to meet the challenges and opportunities of an increasingly digital world.
