Tourism in Vietnam Benefits from Chinese Visitors
Tourism in Vietnam has largely prospered in the initial four months of 2025. Government statistics indicate a hearty welcome of 7.67 million international travelers, up a significant 24% from 2024’s equivalent period. While April experienced a relative dip with 1.65 million arrivals (still 6% higher than the previous year), the overarching trend points toward a robust recovery, bolstering optimism for the ambitious year-end goal of 22 to 23 million international visitors.
Peak Season Factors
Tourism experts suggest that April’s slightly lower numbers could be due to its timing—falling at the end of Vietnam’s peak international tourism season, generally running from September/October to March/April. This seasonal pattern reflects global inclinations, as travelers often seek Vietnam’s cooler climate to immerse themselves in its rich culture, stunning landscapes, and lively cityscapes.
Visitor Profiles and Travel Choices
Of the 7.67 million international visitors this year, a considerable 86% (about 6.6 million) arrived via air, illustrating the importance of air travel for long-distance tourists. Road travel accounted for 924,900 arrivals, while maritime routes welcomed over 158,000 visitors—probably influenced by cruise tourism in Vietnam. Asian tourists formed the majority, representing 78% of arrivals with over 5.9 million individuals. China leads as Vietnam’s biggest source market, followed by South Korea, Taiwan, Japan, and India, which highlights Vietnam’s strong regional allure.
Economic Boost
The tourism surge has considerably enhanced the economy. Revenues from hospitality reached around VND270,000 billion in the first four months of 2025. Key cities such as Quang Ninh, Da Nang, Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi, and Hai Phong witnessed impressive sales increases of 15-19%. Overall, tourism revenue is anticipated to surpass VND30,000 billion, which is spurred by the increased travel during holidays, the Tet festival, and celebrations commemorating the 50th anniversary of Southern Liberation and National Reunification Day.
2025 Projections
The early performance in 2025 provides a promising view for the future of tourism in Vietnam. The 7.67 million arrivals are viewed as a positive move towards achieving the national target of hosting 22 to 23 million international visitors by year’s end. Sustained investment in infrastructure, diverse tourism offers, and strategic marketing within key Asian markets will be essential to ensure further growth.
Vietnam’s appealing combination of cultural treasures, scenic beauty, and festive events positions the country as an important Southeast Asian tourist destination.
