India is the most populous country in the world and has one of the largest workforce globally. The country is also a house of some of the biggest organisations in the world with lakhs of people working in them. These organisations range from government departments and public sector units to private companies and multinational corporations.
These employers come from various sectors such as manufacturing, IT, banking, transportation and also defence. Notably, the largest employers in the country by workforce are government agencies such as Railways and Indian Army. These employers also include private companies like – Wipro, Infosys, TCS, etc. But the question arises which organisation is the biggest in the country by its workforce.

Banking Sectors, Coal Mining, Reliance Retail’s Contribution to Employment in India
In addition to the largest employers previously noted, India’s coal mining and retail sectors are significant sources of employment. Coal mining employed over 248,000 people in 2022, while Reliance Retail employed approximately 245,581 in 2023.
As of 2024, India’s banking sector employs a major part of workforce. SBI is the largest employer, with approx 232,296 employees. HDFC Bank and ICICI Bank also some of the biggest employers in the country, with around 213,527 and 126,660 employees respectively. Axis Bank and Punjab National Bank each employ over 100,000 people.
In the insurance sector, the Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC) dominates the market and has about 1,14,000 employees as of 2021. These industries provide consistent job growth and contribute to national employment levels.
