Chetana Patnaik, CHRO, LTIMindtreeLTIMindtree last year introduced Mothers’ Rooms within its office premises to support the women employees who join back after their maternity break. With this move, the company also wanted to contribute to gender equality, and help improve the maternal health of its female employees.
“By introducing Mothers’ Rooms in our office premises, we’re providing comfortable and private spaces for nursing mothers to express care for their babies while balancing work responsibilities. These rooms are designed to promote breastfeeding, improve physical and emotional wellbeing, and foster a sense of community as well among working mothers,” says Chetana Patnaik, CHRO, LTIMindtree, in an exclusive interview with ETHRWorld.
“The initiative also contributes to achieving sustainable development goals such as promoting gender equality, improving maternal and child health, and supporting economic growth,” Patnaik adds.
Some key features of these mothers’ rooms, according to Patnaik, are:
● Private and quiet spaces: A peaceful environment for mothers to express care for their babies;
● Storage facilities: Secure storage for breastmilk and baby supplies in the reserved space;
● Comfortable seating: Ergonomic chairs and soothing ambience to reduce stress for the mother;
● Hygiene and cleanliness: Regular sanitation and maintenance to ensure a clean environment;
● Lactation rooms: Private spaces for nursing mothers to feed their babies.
Additional on-site childcare and creche services are also provided by the company to support working mothers, or both working parents, to balance work and family responsibilities.
By providing such facilities, LTIMindtree demonstrates its commitment to supporting working mothers, and promoting diversity, equity and inclusion in the workplace, says Patnaik.
“We’ve had the creche facility for our employees since the inception of both the organisations (erstwhile LTI & Mindtree), as well as since the larger entity was formed,” adds Patnaik.
Mothers’ rooms and creches are available for the employees across all the offices and centres of LTIMindtree in India.
Impact and outcome
LTIMindtree’s initiatives for supporting the women employees have generated a number of favourable outcomes.
Apart from the overall gender ratio being nearly 31 percent women, Patnaik shares that the company also has a diversity hiring ratio that is pretty much the same, with 29.15 percent hires of FY 2024 belonging to this diverse group.
She also attributes a reduced women employees attrition rate to the above initiatives.
The attrition of women was 14.9 percent in FY 2023-24, which has come down from 20.3 percent in FY 2022-23.
As a result of LTIMindtree’s ‘Return-to-Work’ programme for the new mothers, coupled with Mothers’ Rooms initiative, the company has achieved 65.89 percent of women employees returning to work after their maternity leave.

Hiring strategy and numbers
“We understand talent expectations, including some of the critical aspects such as higher flexibility at work, access to cutting-edge technology, faster career progression and inclusive, empathetic culture. Thus, in FY24, we calibrated our hiring strategy in response to market dynamics, focusing on fulfilling demands internally and selectively hiring externally,” says Patnaik.
Hiring efforts at LTIMindtree are directed towards attracting talent and engaging with them more efficiently. Since FY 2024-25, the company has brought in differentiated hiring strategy for niche skills, leveraging more referral and alumni connect, an improved onboarding experience, revamping talent experience by creating a vibrant workspace with more opportunities, and pushing and pursuing a continuous learning culture for all the employees and new joinees.
“For instance, our applicant tracking system was enhanced to improve candidate experience and prevent impersonation in the hiring process. We also piloted new sourcing methods using various social media platforms to tap into talent,” says Patnaik.
