Thurston County teen to graduate at age 19 with degree in quantum information science from USC
By The Chronicle staff
Liv Coverdale, an Olympia teen who graduated from Pacific Lutheran University at age 16, is set to graduate May 16 from the University of Southern California with a master’s of science degree in quantum information science at age 19.
At the time she graduated from Pacific Lutheran University, Coverdale was the youngest female to graduate in PLU’s 132-year history.
At the age of 11, Coverdale attended South Puget Sound Community College in Lacey to take part in the state’s Running Start program. Running Start is typically offered to high school students who are in 10th grade or above, but eligibility to enroll in the program is based on grades instead of age.
When Coverdale turned 13, she had already transferred to Pacific Lutheran University in Parkland. Initially, she studied business at PLU, but she eventually switched her major to computer science.
Coverdale will graduate on May 16 in Los Angeles and plans to return home to Washington state to apply for jobs as an analyst. Coverdale intends to pursue a career in finance.
“In the near future quantum computers will be able to predict trends and risk in a far superior way to classical computers,” Coverdale stated.
On her LinkedIn profile, Coverdale stated, “I want to thank my professors, mentors, and fellow grad students for all of their support and guidance along the way.”
