‘Thunderbolts*’ Star Wyatt Russell Talks New Steven Spielberg UFO Film
Wyatt Russell, the star of TV series like Under the Banner of Heaven and Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, has recently enjoyed the release of his most important project in the MCU, the superhero team-up film Thunderbolts* (also known as The New Avengers). Russell’s future projects include the other upcoming MCU movie, Avengers: Doomsday, of course. But he’s also starring in the secretive UFO movie directed by Steven Spielberg. The actor has shared a few details about shooting the mysterious movie with the Hollywood legend: “It’s a dream.”
Apart from Thunderbolts*, Russell is currently promoting another recent feature in which he co-stars with Dennis Quaid. The actors sat down with Collider to talk about Broke, the film that sees Russell play True Brandywine, a rodeo rider who gets trapped in a blizzard and must do whatever he can to survive.

Each of these classic Spielberg films can be seen ten times over and still feel as good as the first time.
However, the conversation segued into Russell’s participation in the Spielberg project. “I’m under absolute lock and key. I was written a letter about it,” Russell says when asked about some plot details. However, he was kind enough to talk about his experience working with the Raiders of the Lost Ark and Saving Private Ryan director:
“Working with Steven Spielberg is what everybody says it is. It’s a dream. He’s a dream. I’ve worked with a lot of great people. I’ve been very lucky. He is so involved in every single aspect of the day. He is so open to everyone’s thoughts, plans, and ideas. He can shift and turn things into a signature moment because that’s what it needed in that 30 seconds, and he just does it.
Obviously, it’s all in his brain. There’s nothing superhuman. He’s a human being who just is an open person and sees film and sees moments of humanity in ways that he knows how to put into his unique vision, and his unique vision is what we’re captivated by. He knows how to translate that to other people. He knows how to push you, the actor, to your absolute technical brink, and knows that you’re going to pull through on the seventh time, even though it’s difficult to do all the layers of what we’re being asked to do.”
What Is Steven Spielberg’s Next “UFO Movie” About?
Columbia Pictures
Steven Spielberg’s next film remains untitled. All we know is that the project will be released by Universal Pictures on Jun. 12, 2026, and that the movie is being written by David Koepp from an original story by Spielberg. The “flying saucer” movie is not Koepp’s first gig alongside the Close Encounters of the Third Kind director. Past projects include Jurassic Park and War of the Worlds. Russell will co-star with Emily Blunt, Colman Domingo, Josh O’Connor, Colin Firth, and Eve Hewson, among others.
Domingo recently said that the movie is “something new and different” and that “it’s a love letter to our humanity.” Co-star Wyatt Russell shows nothing but admiration for the director, saying that Spielberg “has an incredible ability, like most leaders do, to bring the best out in people. He’s an incredible person and makes incredible movies for a reason.” Consider us officially excited.
