Surf film legend back in Nambour to honour Andy Irons and Blue Horizon — The Sunshine Valley Gazette
Following last year’s sold-out Occumentary tour, legendary surf filmmaker Jack McCoy returns to the Sunshine Coast on Saturday May 24 for a special screening of Blue Horizon at Nambour Cinema.
The one-night-only event marks the 20th anniversary of the cult surf documentary and celebrates the legacy of three-time world champion Andy Irons. McCoy will be joined by fellow surf icon Derek Hynd and other special guests.
Released in 2004, Blue Horizon contrasts the careers of two very different surfers: Andy Irons, who rose to fame through the professional world tour, and Dave “Rasta” Rastovich, who turned away from competition to chase perfect waves as a free surfer. McCoy began filming in 2002, just as Irons began his run of world titles and a fierce rivalry with 11-time world champion Kelly Slater.
“The film was about the yin and yang of surfing,” McCoy said. “I had two of the best surfers ever – with completely different approaches. The result was magic. I couldn’t have scripted it better.”
The story remains timely, with recent champions like John John Florence and Stephanie Gilmore stepping away from full-time competition to explore surfing on their own terms.
The film won multiple awards, including Surfer Magazine’s 2004 Movie of the Year, and screened to more than 88,000 people worldwide.
McCoy will present unseen footage and behind-the-scenes stories before the screening in his trademark “talk story” style. Slater was also expected to appear at selected shows, schedule permitting.
