Cazorla new President of the Royal Academy of Jurisprudence
Luis María Cazorla Prieto has been unanimously elected as the new President of the Royal Academy of Jurisprudence and Legislation of Spain. He succeeds Manuel Pizarro Moreno, who recently stepped down at his own request.
In his inaugural address to the Academy’s Plenary, Cazorla outlined his strategic priorities for the new mandate, including a reinforced institutional role for the Academy in key legal debates—both nationally and internationally, with a particular focus on the Ibero-American legal sphere.
As President of the Royal Academy, Cazorla will also assume the presidency of the Instituto de España, which encompasses the country’s ten Royal Academies. His first meeting as chair of the governing board is scheduled for May 27.
Born in Larache (Morocco) in 1950, Cazorla holds a law degree and a PhD in Law from the Complutense University of Madrid. He is a State Attorney, former Counsel to the Spanish Parliament, and a former Inspector of Services at the Ministry of Finance. He also serves as Professor of Financial and Tax Law.
He was appointed a full academician of the Royal Academy in 2010, where he delivered his inaugural speech on “The Governance of Financial Globalization: A Legal Perspective.”
Cazorla’s public service includes roles as Secretary General of the Spanish Congress of Deputies, Chief Legal Advisor to the Parliament, and Secretary of the Central Electoral Board.
In the private sector, he served as Secretary General and Board Secretary of Bolsas y Mercados Españoles (BME) until 2022. He currently chairs the Advisory Council of Aranzadi LA LEY. He has also been a member of the Legal Commission of the International Olympic Committee and First Vice President of the Spanish Olympic Committee. He is also founding partner and President of Cazorla Abogados and has more than 30 years of professional experience.
An accomplished scholar and writer, Cazorla is the author of over thirty legal books and numerous academic articles, as well as nine historical novels. He has been awarded the Grand Cross of the Order of St. Raymond of Peñafort, the Grand Cross of Military Merit (Air Division), the Civil Guard Merit Medal, and the Cross of Sporting Merit for his legal contributions to the field of sports.
