Ironheart Confirmed to Take Place Days After This 3-Year-Old MCU Film With an 84% RT Score

Ironheart continues the story of Riri Williams as the Iron Man-inspired character looks to carve her legacy in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. A new featurette previewing the Disney+ series confirms when the show is set following the events of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.

Marvel Studios via X (formerly Twitter) released a new teaser featuring interviews with lead actor Dominique Thorne and the various creatives involved in Ironheart, including Wakanda Forever director Ryan Coogler and creator/showrunner Chinaka Hodge. During the featurette, released a day before its new trailer, Hodge confirmed that Ironheart is set three days after the Black Panther sequel, exploring the “formative years” of the titular hero.

Coogler shared his excitement about Ironheart, recalling the buzz that surrounded the comic book counterpart’s introduction in 2016. According to the award-winning director, it was “really exciting for me to bringing that character into the MCU and the Wakanda fabric.” He also stated he’s “very excited” about the series and is “honored to have the opportunity to be delivering these stories that people love so much.” Hodge also credited Coogler for adapting Riri’s backstory to the small screen, with Thorne calling the show her “hard-hitting introduction” to the MCU.

Riri, a genius MIT student and creator, was a key character in Wakanda Forever, working alongside the new Black Panther, Shuri (Letitia Wright), after it was initially discovered that she was behind the creation of a vibranium detector. The fallout from Wakanda Forever, which earned an 84% critical rating on Rotten Tomatoes and over $859 million worldwide, will be further explored in Ironheart, with Thorne teasing that Riri will be doing a lot of self-reflection following the sequel’s many emotional moments. Ironheart completed production around the time of Wakanda Forever‘s theatrical release in late 2022, though additional principal photography occurred early last year.

While engaging with Parker, Riri discovers several secrets that pit technology against magic, putting her on a journey filled with danger and adventure. Thorne and Ramos star alongside Lyric Ross (Natalie Washington), Alden Ehrenreich (Joe McGillicuddy) and Captain America: Civil War‘s Jim Rash (Dean of MIT), with Borat star Sacha Baron Cohen featuring in an undisclosed role.

The Series Has Been Delayed Multiple Times

The upcoming Phase Five miniseries features six episodes and comes after several delays by Marvel. Meanwhile, Thorne, who nearly rejected playing Riri, has expressed her hopes for Ironheart to reappear in the upcoming Avengers sequels, Doomsday and Secret Wars, wanting an on-screen face-to-face with Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom.

Ironheart premieres via Disney+ on Jun. 24 with a triple-episode premiere.
